Troubles with Flexplate and 6 bolt Verter. (ATI/Yank)
Hey everyone, I've been searching on here all morning and have'nt found a conclusive solution. So I'm hoping some of you could shed some light on this. Here is my problem.
I am preparing to install a built TH400 into my 2004 GTO. I bought a Yank Extreme 3600 6-Lug converter with the longer snout to accomodate the LS1 crankshaft. I found a brand new ATI-915733 Flexplate in the Summit Clearance section for $100. It seems to have great reviews and even YANK suggests that these are the best flexplates out there. So I snatched it up.
Only 3 of the 6 mounting pads line up on the flexplate. The other 3 are offset about 3/16" or so. I called Yank this morning and the gentleman said to just use 3 of them as their are plenty of people out there pushing 1000HP. The conversation was very short as he seemed very busy. He said to just pick up a TCI and be done with it however, the ATI was recommended by them in the first place!?
My GTO is running 2 66mm turbos on a 403ci stroker and I plan to exceed the 1000HP mark with this transmission. For this reson, I really want to utilize all 6bolts, rather than just 3.
Do you think it is okay to open up the holes on the flexplate? I'd have to remove at least .200" towards the center of the flexplate. Is there any safety issues with doing this. I was thinking of using my high speed Carbide Burr to remove the metal, and finish it off with small file. If anyone has a better way of doing this, please let me know!
(BTW, there's another New ATI-915733 flexlate including the GM spacer and ARP crank bolts in the Summit/Reno clearance section for $150. PM me if you want me to grab it and ship it!)
Thanks,
-D

Yeah, I'll try and upload the pictures tonight. I'm sure it's the correct part number as their were two of them in the clearance section. They both fit the exact same as eachother.
The reason it was so cheap is because it was a return, or got scratched up during handling. The clearance section is a gold mine for parts at 50% or less vs. new.
Thanks,
Dan

what they said-there are dual pattern flywheels, and single pattern for the 6 bolt converters-there are a ton cars running 3 bolts, but whatever your comfortable with-is your converter large or small pattern-my guess its the large pattern, and you would have to slot the other 3 holes outward

Well I came home for lunch to take a look at the FP. The number stamped on it is #915543. I googled it and found a listing on JEGS. http://www.jegs.com/i/ATI/085/915543/10002/-1
Summit however, does not carry this part number. So I'm going to guess that this flexplate and the #915733 are edentical except the latter comes with a crank spacer and ARP bolts for a th350/400 converter.
The 6 lugs on the converter are not evenly spaced. There's two patterns on each set of 3 lugs. I'm probably going to open up the 3 holes to accomodate the extra bolts anyways. Thanks everyone.
