Default car not going when transmission is in D

Hey guys, this is a generic question, but I have a problem. When the car is in D, and I give it gas, it takes it a second or two to go. This is under any pedal pressure, and when it takes off, it hits hard. If I shift it manually, it works ok. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions? This is actually out of a dodge neon, but I know there are some smart folks in here that know most transmissions liek the back of their hand, and this seems to be a common issue among most transmissions. I also have a post in their forums, but their responses are lacking.

thanks guys

Could be a weak pump or the converter is going bad.

If it is a 3 speed it should be a670 trans. The converter could be coming apart and sticking the governer or the pressure regulator. Also the foward clutches could be slipping or the low sprag.drop the pan and check for metal.carrier bearings in the differential also like to come apart on this trans. Is there any whining noises or growling noise?

ok, i drove this last night. This is what it is doing. I have to manually shift it to get any kind of 'decent" driving out of it. I can hear something physically rattling, so I dont knwo what that means. If I manually shift it, the fastest it will go is 40 mph. Are you still thinking torque converter?

It could be the converter drop the pan & see if there is any metal. Does it shift through all the gears or is it staying in 1st or 2nd.

ok, I plugged it up to my laptop last night and here is what I got. Come to find out, I think its actually a 4 spd transmission due to it throwing a 4th gear out of range error.

PO700 - basically means a general transmission malfunction, and to pull more codes
PO731-734 is first-fourth gear out of range
PO1775 is some kind of error I cant find. I think it has to do with a solendoid stuck in a L/R position. I tried to google it but there arent may results (2004 neon with auto 4spd).

I guess my question, I think I found the solendoid packs on the internet for around 100 bucks, and it appears to be an external part. WOuld you all say its worth a guess that this could be wrong?

Solenoid packs do go bad alot also speed sensors can give you gear ratio codes also. You still have to see where the noise is coming from you don't want to chase problems if the unit has to come out anyway. That trans is a 604.

Thanks for your help, I am definitely going to listen to it closer today. Is the 604 the same as the 40TE? The only reason I am asking is because I was trying to find the part number of the transmission, and that seems to be the same thing everyone has for a 2004. I can find anything stamped on the housing, though

A 604 is also called a 41te.
