The r.p.m. limit is 5,500 IMO after that the 3-4 clutches are dragging & line pressure drops with a stock pump. Afterawhile you will burn up the 3-4 clutches.

It's not the pump thats the problem. The stock pump slide spring starts giving at 5500 rpm causing the pressure to drop.

I have a pic of that spring in my tranny build write-up thread. It is the one that is at an angle on the side of the outer pump slide. The factory uses a weaker dual spring. Aftermarket springs are the stiff single style.

I spin my tranny to 7,000 rpm with all the good parts installed. seems to hold pressure fine. I did have a stock rebuild(2,000miles on it) in there a few years back that started slipping on the 2-3 shift with a mild bolt on ls1. On teardown and inspection/ reaserch I found it had the dual stock springs. At the time I was revving to 6,500.

The Hydra-Matic 4L60E Technicians Guide states that the maximum shift speed is 6000 rpm...

it is probably conservative by a few hundred rpm.

Edit: I also added the 4L80E specs from the 4L80E HMTG.

I know the actual pump is not the problem i was just saying with a unmodified pump you have a pressure drop.

Awesome thanks for the replies. So would this also hold true for a stock 4l80e?

A 4l80 is more forgiving than a 60e.
