Default Fresh Rebuild with no 4th gear.

I just had my tranny rebuilt. It has been built a few times after breaking various parts this time was only to replace the 3-4 clutches. 3-4 clutches where replaced and reassembled and had no 4th gear. Everything else worked normally just not 4th. it was pulled back out and pulled apart and air checked. No leaking seals could be found. Reinstalled and still the same problem. Can anyone suggest something?

Couple things to look at.

Any codes?

Do you get the command for 4th gear?

Is the "a" solenoid energized when the trans should be in 4th?

If you used the a sonnax 4th servo, did you install the small gold washer on the servo pin behind the e-clip and the factory steel washer?

No codes, I have tried to command 4th and still nothing. it shows the solenoid working, but I did switch them just to check and still nothing.

Not sure on the washer deal, but I will look tomorrow and pull the servo back off.

You installed the gold check ball on the wrong side of the spring in the 1-2 shift valve. The check ball goes in towards the valve and then the spring goes in.

Good point! However........

Here is a valve body pic. As built408 said the ball goes in first and then the green spring followed by the solenoid and it's retaining clip. Here is a valve body laid out for you.

Also here is a picture of the servo to help you out.

My reference was really only if you are using a sonnax 4th servo. Other things to check would be to make sure the seal is on the piston if using the factory one or not damaged. Also make sure that the 3-4 accumulator in the case was installed and also that the seal was installed or is not damaged.

Never took any of the valve body apart during rebuild and it was working fine before the rebuild. I then changed the shift noids after the problem arose. I could see the servo being a problem because I broke it apart to clean it out, I will make sure I put the washer back in the right spot. hopefully thats it. if not I will be selling a almost fully built 4L65E

I wouldn't even consider it a rebuild if the valve body wasn't taken apart and inspected. It's worth a shot to at least check what I mentioned above, and make sure the servos were installed correctly.

Your welcome. I have seen this error made in rebuilds many times in my years. That is the main reason why I suggested it and I'm glad it fixed your issue. Sorry that I missed your return call yesterday but from reading this thread it sounds like your good to go. Have a great weekend. Vince
