I'd have to say going with the auto is going to be the cheaper route.
If your going to pick up any parts Id recommend a high strength flexplate, a good brand of transmission (I run a Performabuilt lvl 2 4L60 and love it) and of course your pedals, shifter, and auto wiring harness

It would definately be cheaper to just rebuild your manual than to swap to an auto. A good built auto will cost you around $2000, plus the core charge since you dont already have one. Billet converters run about $700, or you can get a cheaper one. The actually parts for the swap you should be able to get secondhand pretty cheap. You will also need your pcm reflashed, not sure if you can tune or not. Depending on what kind of shape your m6 parts are in will determine how much you can get for those parts. Im guessing if your considering rebuilding the manual they aren't in the best of shape.
Your best bet would be to find someone that has an auto and wants to swap to a manual so you could work out a deal. Then it may be cheaper to go the auto route.
