popping out of 4th
Alright this is for a friend of mine who isnt a member. When driving a long distance, like 100 miles +, the car will pop out of 4th. I drove the car and it comes out of 4th but doesnt feel like it goes completely into 3rd. rpms raise about 500, from 2k to 2500. When you give it a little gas it will slide back into 4th or if you get on it it will kick into 3rd. But if you pull it down into 3rd and cruise for a mile or two you can run in 4th for 20-30 more minutes until it does it again. kinda feels like the torque converter to me but im not sure, kinda think its getting hot and not locking up. the car is basicly stock with stock converter. 99 camaro

Misfires that come and go, or TCC slip-learning can
both bug like that. The former will be abrupt lock /
unlock, under control; the latter, you might hear some
groaning as the TCC slips while engaged and either
tightens itself up (learn back) or then unlocks and
stays unlocked w/ P1870 until next key-off.
I would bet on misfires but have seen both.

the car did throw a code last week but it was an emissions code, he cleared it and came back a few days later. If it did turn out to be a p1870 what would be the solution?

With the 1870 code you would probably have an issue with the regulator valve in the valve body, worn stator bushings, defective solenoid or a bad torque converter and so on. It does sound like your issue has to deal with the TCC. However as Jimmy Blue stated engine misfires can cause the condition that you are having. If you have not got a 1870 code then I would probably looking at the engine misfires and go from there. Vince

I have a snap-on scanner at work that I can check codes and watch for miss fires. I've never tried to scan it on the interstate but at idle it fires perfectly. I don't know why it would start missing after an hour or more of interstate driving and no other time.

Not many people go on a 45 to 60 minute test drive with a scanner hooked up. Usually burned fluid and a description of the complaint is enough to ream the vb bore oversize and install a new valve.

Ya I could be wrong but I just dont think its a miss fire. If it is a tcc regulator valve is that something that could be fixed easily? Could we get by with just installing another cooler or would we need to replace the regulator valve. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but ignorant when it comes to transmissions. I can have the tranny out in about an hour but have no clue where to go from there, or what a tcc regulator valve is or located. If it comes down the pulling the tranny I might just have my buddy get another stock converter, a cooler, and valve.
Its not that big of a problem and it doesnt effect his everyday driving but he was looking at selling the car and doesn't want to sell it then the buyer calling half way home saying the trans is slipping. Just trying to do the right thing. thanks for any info!

The valve goes in the valve body. Typically the car or just the VB can be dropped of at a trans shop, the shop can ream the bore oversize for a Sonnax valve.
Or you can change the valve yourself with a Superior products valve with o-rings. Or with a TransGo SK kit in the small box.
It's common for these valves to wear out and cause the 1870 code. If you get the transgo or superior valve it can be taken out and used in another trans if this isn't the problem.

It's SK4L60E, it's the small box thats more of a problem fixing kit.
The 4L60E HD2 kit is the high performance kit that most people use.
