Question Transmission swap- 4L60E to 4L65E

I have a 98 Blazer ZR2 and the transmission is failing for the 2nd time. I had it rebuilt at about 130,000 and now has 196,000. Will the 4L65E be a direct fit, and if not, what modifications are necessary to complete this swap? I have read that the 65E came out in 2001, is that correct? Will the year difference be a hinderance? Thanks for any input!

4l80e is beefier and stronger. is it failing from abuse or just miles?

i put the 4L65e in my camaro, it is a direct fit. All you need to do is swap the bell-housing and the pan is a little deeper

You could have a 4l65E based trans built for your vehicle. However in your case I would not be a direct swap. Reason being is your vehicle does not have an ls1 in it and that is what this trans was installed into. The bell, input shaft and stator are all different in your application.

What type of failures have you been seeing? How was the unit built the last time around? Given the miles on your vehicle you have actually done pretty well. If there is something we can do for you feel free to give us a call. Vince

Thanks to all for the responses. I had the transmission rebuilt by a friend of a friend for $1300 about 5 years ago. Kennedy wanted $2600, so I thought this was a pretty good deal. The truck has never been abused, and the only offroading has been on the lake for ice fishing.

The transmission at this point is not necessarily failing, but reverse slips a little bit when truck is cold. I also experienced it slipping out of overdrive at highway speeds. I put some Lucas Transmission treatment in it and the OD issue has gone away, but I can still tell the transmission is getting weak, especially in reverse. I am nervous about the coming cold weather and how it will hold up as it is now. I know nothing about transmissions, so to tackle this myself would be a lost cause. I also don't want to dump a bunch of money into it considering the miles. Maybe I'll bring it in and have it diagnosed. Could maybe be something not necessarily in need of a complete rebuild?

I am looking for a ZR2 pickup currently with a 5 speed, and would like to sell the blazer, but don't feel comfortable selling with the tranny issue.

Here is the truck. We'll see if the pictures come through. The paint on the bumpers, flares, lower panels, front end/grille, and tire rack is Dupli Color textured metallic. I did this myself a couple of weeks ago and had really improved the look of the truck. Very easy stuff to work with, and looks very nice in person.

With slippage in reverse I would suspect either a clutch issue, hard seals or sealing rings on the stator tube. Possibly a worn boost valve, worn reverse input drum or a loose plate on the rear of the separator plate. Hard to tell for sure without really seeing it for myself. Good luck on which ever direction you choose to go. Vince
