I have been thinking about this. The Auto shift **** in my 2002 Z28 just looks so out of place sticking up so high off the console. I have been thinkin about taking it apart and just cutting out a chunk of the metal rod.

Has anyone done this? If so pics would be greatly appreciated. Also were there any problems with this?

I can only remember one thread on here that a guy shortened it about an inch or so. If you searched back far enough I'm sure you could locate it.

i always wondered that too when i had an auto. just remember to leave enough so you can shift into 1st or low.

I did mine a long time ago. Like said above, make sure you run through the full travel area of the shifter to make sure you dont cut it to short. when you are ready to make the cut you can use a steel tubing cutting tool.That is what I used and it worked great. Also remember that you will have to leave enough of the plastic lock release rod to engage the **** button. You will also need a hacksaw blade to make the new notches in the shifter housing to attach your **** with the original u-clip.
