edge stall driveability?
First off, I love my mechanic (Tracey Scott) and believe he knows what he's talking about when he tells me I want an Edge stall. I think he said a 3200. Here's my situation and question.
89 Trans Am GTA 3600 lbs with driver
4L60
Torquer 2
Tsp 5.3's
Ls6 intake
full exhaust
p&p tb
stock 3.23 gear in borg warner rear
stock 16 inch gold honeycombs wearing Michilin pilot sport a/s plus rubber.
Tracey says the driveability will be great with the above converter but I don't know exactly what this means. Is he saying it will drive just like stock under partial throttle or accelleration, or that it will be great compared to some other higher stall converters?
The car used to be my Dad's and he will drive it occassionally. He had a 2,200 stall in a 78 1/2 Z28 and HATED the way it drove in town. That was 15 years ago and I don't know how much torque converter technology has changed.
I was hoping for very good throttle response at slow speeds and low rpm without having to draw unnecessary attention every time I leave a light or make a slow turn in front of a Statie. At the same time, I would like it to do it's job when I nail from a roll or foot brake it at the line.
Any thoughts? If what I'm wanting is unrealistic maybe I am better off to step down in cam so I can run a stock converter or something close. I just hate to give up a bunch of hp, sound quality and et over driveability for street use.. but realistically the car will spend 99 % of it's time being cruised by my wife and I. She will drive it too and I don't want something like a loose stall and wet roads to get her hurt.
Any advice is appreciated. I would just bother Tracey but the guy works his tail off and I already take up too much of his time worrying about every little detail.

Well, looks like you and I are a match made in Heaven Enjoy the vids I made when I had a 3200 Street Edge. I will say that I saw absolutely nothing special or great from the Edge converter. It didn't do anything that was so great you could write home about. It was just a non-billet (street series at $550) 9.5 inch converter. And although Andre is a nice guy to deal with, he kept pushing me to a 3k and I wanted at least a 3600. I ended up buying a Yank 4k later anyway bc thats what I really wanted at the time but didn't know it. Anyway, on to the videos:

In my 87 camaro I have an Edge 9.5, 3200 stall in a built 700r4. GMPP 350HO crate engine. 330/380 crank ratings.
I've had it for 3 yrs now and I personally love it. Its a tad looser than stock, but it drives very nice IMO. You'll forget after a week its not stock. Get on the gas and it flashes real nice. Shifts stay up in the powerband.
For the record I've driven nothing else, so I can't compare it against something more expensive.

Im running an edge 3600 and it does great for my street car, ive put about 8k miles on it and no problems. I can even idle away from dead stops and take off almost like a stock converter.
