Default Help me choose a Torque Convertor

I have a 1998 Trans Am with full bolt ons,LS6 intake,LT headers,ORY pipe etc and a Comp Cams 232/238 595/601 112+2 Cam, the car definantly needs a stall convertor it seems to want to creep at idle with the stock stall. Any advice what would be a good convertor and stall size for my combo??? thanks

Car is mainly a show car but will see some track use

Sounds like our 4C 3600-3800 would be a good choice for mostly street use. The cam would really like our 5C 4200+. But that might be a bit much for mostly street use, traction would be near impossible.

Minimum of 3600. I would go with a 4000 though.

I recommend ptc.

I've got a similar setup and I'm running a 3600ss. Very street friendly, but it's definetely a change from stock.

Circle D multi disc 4500 here. It s a great convertor. It may be alittle more then you need.
What gears are in the car. You really need to do both.

Yank ss4000 my camaro was driven every day for a few months with the Yank ss4000 with no issues

You'll probably want something in the 3600-4000 range although I would go with a 4k from my experience. I would obviously suggest FTI first but you can't go wrong with a Circle D/Yank either.

For now my gear is stock 3.23 after the convertor I will be looking ot get 3.73 gears.

What is a decent price for a convertor?? I see the prices go from $400 to well over $1000. let me know what you guys think. thanks

Any name brand non billet is going to run from 450-600.

Any billet is going to run from 650+..

I ended up going with a yank ss3600. Yank told me that converter would be the best all around converter for me considering street/track a couple times a year. Suposed to be 96% eficient. Cant wait to get it in for springtime.

I just ordered a Yank SS3600 with my Level 3 from FLT. Best thing you can do is to just talk to each sponsor, and see what the recommend.

Man your car is an ideal candidate for the Circle D 4C 3600-3800. It will work well with your 3.23s and even better when you decide to swap to the 3.73s. You will love it!!!

I love my 4,000 FTI. Mine is a 9 1/2 billet convertor. I DD my car 50 miles a day. Stock motor, I get right at 20 mpg with the way I drive and pull low 1.6 60's. I had the stock 3:23 gears at first and it was good but when I changed over to 373's it was so much better. My 373's gave up (did not get to break them in the right way) now I have 3:42's and it's still very good. I would not change a thing with the convertor it's perfect for my car, I can't wait to get a cam and really see what it will do.

I have a vig 3200 with 3.73 and drives great. Very civil. I have tossed around the idea of stepping up to a 4k stall. I just wonder if its really worth it, as i doubt i will ever be able to hook..LOL

I have a Circle D and my sister has a Yank both are great convertors. I too would recommend 3600-4000 rpm.

+1. FTI 4000 stall is what I have in my Trans am, it's great. I will be looking to cut a 1.5X 60ft. once my suspension goes on. I could easily DD my Trans am with it in. When driving it, it just feels like it has a little less power off a dead stop but once I start accelerating it feels like stock except for its just more RPM's. I think a 4k stall will work GREAT with the cam you have.
