4l60 converter not staying locked.. Is it going out?
This is the first time since I've had my car modded that its acted up on me. Car is cammed, TCI 3500, and all supporting bolt ons. I was coming home last night down the freeway cruising about 55, the car was in OD. All at once, the converter started coming unlocked and trying to lock back up. It would lock for about 2 seconds and then unlock for about the same.
I was close to a friends house so I pulled in and checked all fluids and they were all fine. I also installed a trans temp gauge 2 weeks ago and they temp never got over 160 during this time.
Once the car cooled off for about 10 minutes, it never did it again the rest of the night. Is this just something weird going on or is it early signs of the trans letting go??

cause when ur cpu reads x amount of misfires ur tq converter will unlock, it happened to me awhile back an when i replaced them with corvette o2's it never did it again. its a common prob from what i read on here. but if your cammed and stalled it might just be going out, i hope not but it might be.

If it is an abrupt lock/unlock/lock then it's misfires. If it's soft
slipping and ends in a 1870 code then it's the wimpy TCI clutches
and too little line pressure*TCC duty. Had the joy of both, back
when. Stock trans tune is not enough pressure at light cruise
for some small diameter converters.

I am having a similar problem and talked to Chris at Circle-D about it. I was under the impression, as it seems you were, that a trouble code had to be set (for a random misfire, bad 02 sensor, etc.) before the computer would take the converter out of lock up. Chris said that the SES light doesn't necessarily have to come on for the computer to sense a problem and keep the converter from locking up. Sometimes, the issue is so minute that it's not enough to throw a code, but enough for the computer to tell the converter not to lock up. Frustrating... Only way to really tell is to get someone with HP Tuners or another software program to monitor the computer's activity while you are driving the car and see what it's reading. Unless you just want to replace the O2 sensors and hope that was the problem...
