Default Fluid for TC

I am planning to put in my torque converter and am wondering how much fluid I will need. Do I need to drain the transmission, or will i just be filing the tc and and topping up? I just flushed it recently and was looking to buy 5quarts for the change.

Just fill the converter with a couple pints to lube it internally prior to putting it in the transmission. Once you start the engine the pump fills the converter. The total amount will depend on how much you loose during the R & R.

I would buy 8 quarts with a deep pan or 7 with a
stock one. Better than making a second trip (with low
fluid). May as well make a full job and fresh start of it
while you've got it all tore up.

When I did mine I stood the trans on the tail and got out all the fluid I could so I could refill with as much new fluid as possible. I ended up using 8-9qts of new dex6 total. You dont have to do it like that. You could just refill what you lose in the pan and put 1/2 qrt or so in the tc before you put it on.

I'm going to be draining my TQ in a bucket when it comes out and re-filling with fluid before it goes in. Probably as other posters mentioned I'd dump at least 2 quarts into it. You don't want to rely on the pump to fill it, it could drain the pan (depending on how much fluid you start with).

My yank would only take 1/2 qrt and I let it sit for a while to try to soak in. IDK how your gonna get 2 in there.

Really? I would've figured at least 1-2 quarts fit in there. I just remember being at UTI and the auto trans teacher telling us do not, under any circumstances, install a TQ without pre-filling it. Haven't really dealt with auto trans stuff since.

Well, I poured some in and tilted it around. Let it sit for a while and put a little more in. Repeated again. It only took 1/2 so idk. I think it even says on the yank card to put 1/2 to 1qrt in. Its been maybe 1500 miles since I had it in and its great Try and get as much in as you can

You want some fluid in the TC to lube it during its first startup (i.e. avoid dry spinning of internals);
if you put too much fluid, it spills out when you install the TC.

The TC holds anywhere between 6-8 quarts.

The trans case/pan holds 4-5 quarts.
