Default Transmission lost 2nd gear, what internally would cause this?

After doing a WOT run with my turbo truck, (from a dead stop up to about 60mph, when it shifted from 1st to 2nd the tires spun pretty hard so I let of the gas)

Right after that, I got a problem where it doesn't want to shift into 2nd until 1st is at about 3k RPM. Once it shifts into 2nd, 2nd gear then almost immediately shifts to 3rd. OD is fine

when I manually shift to 1st gear and give it gas, there seems to be no slipping

when I manually shift to 2nd gear and give it the gas, it slips like crazy, as in it barely accelerates and the RPMS fly up wanting to hit rev limiter. It will randomly "softly" catch and not slip but it happens for a slip second.

3rd is fine, along with OD

anyone know what would cause this internally?

2nd acumualtor piston seal or piston cracked did you use the aluminum pistons on the build or did you use the stock plastics. other than that check the servoe seals.

It is still the stock transmission, just pushing my luck with it lol I'm not sure if it has the plastic or aluminum.

I could possible fix this with the transmission still in the truck?

also, are you talking about the 1-2 accumulator piston located in the housing that you first see right when you take the pan off?

thanks for all the help!

awesome, just making sure. Do you think it would be bad if I drive it tomorrow to get it fixed?

Pulled the pan and accumulator housing.. the piston was plastic and seemed to be in good condition, along with the springs and the inside walls of the housing. I replaced it with an aluminum one anyways. Put on a new filter, put the pan on added oil and took it for a drive, it's still doing it..

I didn't have time to check the servo seals, what would be the chances that it would be a bad seal?

A shop I went to get the parts from was telling me it's the band

I ordered a corvette 2nd gear servo, I HOPE it comes in tomorrow and I HOPE it is the problem. My chances are extremely slim that my 2nd servo piston/seal is damaged, but I have my fingers crossed. If it doesn't fix it, this 4L60E is going into the dumpster and being replaced by a 4L80E.

I will def. let you know how the servo looks though.

Thanks for replying to the thread/keeping it alive!

I'm no expert but if it was the band it would slip in 4 gear also right?

I'm having similar problems.

Keep me posted if you can, and if I find anything I will keep you posted also.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the band would be slipping in 4th also, but since 4th gear it so low I might not be feeling it slipping. The reason I think it might be the 2nd gear servo is because of how it lost 2nd gear completely all of a sudden after going crazy on it, it didn't progressively get worse, it just went straight to no 2nd gear

I drove it again and realized it had no 2 or 4th gears.
Found this by manually shifting it.

I pulled my transmission today and found some problems.

The band was wore all the way down the the metal (mostly)
The 2 gear accumulator was froze in the bore.
The drum the band rides on was all scared up.
The 2 4 servo feels a little sloppy?

I pulled the clutches and they all looked good almost new. so I plan to just replace the bad stuff and see what happens.

If you can get the servo out that would be a easy thing to check. Keep in mind the few servos I have pulled, all of them I had to cut the first o ring and pull it out to get it out. So at a minimum have a new o ring on hand. (they are cheap)

Swapped out the 2nd gear servo and also inspected the rest of the servo assembly, everything looked perfectly fine. After I put everything back and took it for a test drive, it is still doing the problem. So yeah, band most def.

4L80E time...

Anyone know what causes the band to burn up?

Any thing that needs to be checked that would cause the band to burn up?
