Default Could the average DIY mechanic install a torque converter?

I'm picking up a 3600 stall from Revmax for their holiday special and I'm wondering - Could the average DIY mechanic install one? I've done a lot of stuff on the car myself - LT headers, fuel pump, water pump, alt relocation kit, opti, I mean you name it externally and I've done it. I'm no expert, and have never been inside the tranny aside from dropping the pan and changing the fluid, but I've managed to do a lot.

Is this something I should attempt or leave to a pro? I've got a buddy who will only charge me probably $150 to put the new TC in.

You *should be able to handle it as long as you have the necessary tools... AKA 55 extensions with swivels and elbows! LOL]

Believe there is a full write up on ls1howto IIRC.

Yeah, all kinds of guys on here have done a TC swap in their driveways. You just need to be able to prop the car up far enough and be able to somehow reach the top bolts on the 'trans...

Cool.. I think I might give it a shot. I'm just worried, as with everything, that something would go wrong and I wouldn't know what to do to fix it lol.

Is the LS1howto on ls1tech or is it another site?

TC INSTALL INFO

TC SPACING
http://www.rosslertrans.com/Converter%20Spacing.htm

try that , if you have access to a lift it is better than laying on the ground
be sure and seat the TC ( turn it untill you feel/hear the 3 clicks and measure the clearnce-you do not want to rune the front pump)also add some fluid to the TC before install it into the pump
Good luck, Johnny

Thanks for the links! It seems like something I could manage for sure! I'm going to post up on the midwest section and see if anyone around here would help me out with it for some cash... it's at least a 2 man job anyway, and it would be great to do it with someone that has a little experience with it.

The good thing is, I'm also in the middle of a header swap, so most of the stuff you need to remove for the converter swap is already off the car anyway no exhaust to mess around with hehe

I did mine all by myself, in the driveway on jack stands.... 14 hours. I'm no master mechanic either and I only have hand tools, no air. So it can be done. +1 on the extensions and swivels to reach those top bolts.

The two most important things to remember when installing a torque converter:

1) Make sure the TC is fully seated on the pump.

2) Shim the TC properly if the clearance is excessive after the trans is bolted to engine. If using an aftermarket SFI flexplate you should be fine, but with the stock flexplate I had to add 1/8" washers I believe (check).

3) Do not force anything!!!

I did mine in a dirt driveway with my brothers help in about 4 hours total. Its not very hard, just labor intensive.
