Default Need help on torque converter

Not sure on what torque converter to run on my new engine i'm building. The engine is a LQ4 408 with LS3 unported heads. Compression is at 10.8:1. I'm having Pat G spec me out a custom cam. Going to be running a Edelbrock Victor Jr. I will be running a 750-850cfm carb. Engine is going to be n/a and going in a 3200-3400 pound 70 trans am. I'm running a TH400 with a 12 bolt and 3.73 gears. I want a 2800-7000 rpm range. I will have 275/60/15 (28" tall tires) on the back. Car will be run 70% strip/30% street. Driven to the track.

Thanks Guys

are you going to use a transbrake ? do you have a brand in mind? some converters are looser than others... Id say a minimum 3600, max 4200... Contact Revmax, theyre a sponsor on here. Tell him what you want to do. He will give you a more accurate recommendation... I believe they give 1 retrim if it doesnt perform like you want...

No transbrake, just foot brake. I didn't have a brand since I don't know much on them personally. Something in the $500 range. Wouldn't a 3600 stall create tons of heat cruising on the freeway driving to the track since its a non-lock up style converter?

you can get them with or without lockup.... I got a revmax 3200 and a couple of the options was lockup and a carbon clutch... Im no expert. You should talk to G at Ace Transmissions and Revmax about your choice. They will give you all the info you need and not pressure you to buy a thing... they sell themselves... the Revmax goes for around 400 shipped, depending on the Tech discount if they offer one...

thanks for some of the recommendations. I thought a TH400 could only use a non-lock style converter due to having no solenoids in the transmission to engage the lockup. Thought it also had something to deal with fluid transferring to the converter.

Me=Not an expert... I know its a 3speed so NO overdrive... didnt think it had lockup feature... The TH400 had a special variable converter but I dont know the specifics. You are going to have a lot of heat if you use a stall, thats just part of having one... A good cooler will fix that

Some th400s had switch pitch converters. A good converter shouldn't build that much heat. Contact some converter shops for reccomendations.

TH400's do not have lock-up.

If you are going to be class racing it then the converter needs to be set up for the engines torque curve. If not, then you need the best of both worlds... meaning a mid 3k to low 4k stall would work fine.

You'll need to set it up with a nice cooler with -6 lines. I suggest a B&M super cooler. It won't generate too much heat because when you're on the highway you won't want to cruise too fast anyhow as you're going to be around 2,800 to 3,500 rpms.
