Actually it likely is a 4 cyl or V6 converter that is restalled (245 mm core). It will hopefully be furnace brazed/tig welded and welded to a billet cover for $700.

I saw a big name $1300 converter last week that was STOCK other than a billet cover and triple disc clutch kit. No furnace brazing/tig welding, etc.

What's the point of a billet cover and triple disc if the rest of the converter is half assed?

You can always buy used.... I scored a PI Vigilante billet 9.5" 3800rpm stall for $300 from another member here.

You don't always get what you pay for, but you pay for what you get (when you want quality).

Worst case scenario, offer the seller a deal for him to pay half of the cost for your or him to take it to a converter shop for them to cut it open, clean it out and inspect it for you. Fairly cheap to do that, typically.

Not true at all. The customer Jake is referring to did in fact buy a pretty big name high dollar converter and was pretty pissed to find out he did pay for something he did NOT get.

A few features of a nice high end converter to look for

Anti-Balloon plate
Furnace Brazed (good)/Tig welded (better)/Both (best)
Billet front cover

Not even remotely something to consider an all encompassing list, but gives the basics.

I'm one of Jake's employees, and it isn't very good business practice to badmouth companies that you and/or the company you work for do business with from time to time. The company, as far as I know, made it right, and generally they put out a pretty quality product. Everyone makes mistakes, we're all human, some mistakes slip through the cracks. I bought mine used. Yank ST 3500. Before I installed in the tranny, I got it checked and made sure everything was tip top shape.

The converter company didn't make it right. The customer was told it "wasn't necessary" to secure the fins to the pump or turbine on his 1500 ft/lb application.

I had my converter guy tig it together.

I can't talk trash about forum sponsors.

Ooh ok, I remembered it was corrected in one way or another, I just didn't think that that company would actually say securing the fins would be fine for that application, that definitely was unexpected. Interesting.

Poor guy, had to bring us his other 4L80E built from another sponsor we had to rebuild, then brought us a converter from another company we had to have our guy rebuild.

Billet front cover makes the difference. Some of the companies selling 4 cyl or V6 based converters with stock front covers can actually do a good job with the TC internals. But the Achilles heel of those converters is the lack of a billet front cover and the resultant small clutch surface area. Running one of those, especially with PWM activated, risks chewing up the clutch resulting in catastrophic failure.

You PAY Extra for the name plate. lol. it depends on what you want to do with your converter.... cruise it or BEAT it.

I TRIED asking a reasonable question like this and after I deleted the first two posts I stopped responding to my 3rd post and moved on. You probably won't get a GOOD answer here.

I bought RevMax and could not be Happier.
