Default Im thinking about my fresh built TH400 instead of a 4L60E

I have a brand new TH400, I know there is no overdrive, but I am wondering how that would work out for me... Has anyone used one in their LS swap?

Go with a 4L80E.... You'll need overdrive if the car is driven on the freeway.
3000 rpm on the freeway going 60 mph gets old real fast with a 3 speed automatic.

Most everybody on here says that the turbo 400 is mainly for track use or city driving.

I just bought a 4l80e on craigslist for 350.00

In a 4l60e, in 3rd gear with no lockup equals over 4k to do 70mph thats with a 3.73 rear on a stock tire. That would be the equivalent of a TH400 gearing. Not for me.

IMHO, that is the best advice you will get.
I suspect you are not building a trailered track-only car; for that a TH400 is perfect.
For any significant street use get a 4L80E for 600+ HP and a 4L60E for less than 500HP. (Between 500 and 600HP, there are various opinions.)
I've seen posts of people regretting putting a TH400 into their LS street cars, not fully realizing how much noise and gas-guzzling that causes.

To get good advice here you need to detail what your car is, HP goals and usage of the car. Just add-ons, NO2, turbo, supercharger, etc.

4l80e 's are getting easier to find, I just picked one up last week for $400. It is a low mile unit out if a 2001 silverado 2500.

This brings up a question from me, is there a source vehicle that came with a more preferred (by us street/strip Fbody guys) gear ratio or some other unique aspect of it in an iteration of the 4L80E?
Thanks,
Dave

If you run a TH400, 28" tire brings the revs down a speed. I run a TH400 28" tire, 3.70 rear and I only dropped 4MPG and went up a few hundred RPM over the 6L80 I replaced. I dont think that is too bad from a locked converter with double overdrive to a non lockup 3 speed.

All 4L80E have the same gear ratio whether they came out of a mobile home or a performance vehicle.
Ask sponsor Jake Performance who is THE expert on the 4L80E.

I enjoy tuning and changing the tune on my car weekly and after each run at the track. I love being able to change the trans shift points and properties from my laptop.
With a 4L80E you will be able to run 11's (or better) at the track and still get 20mph on the highway in an LS car.

Default gear

gear ratios are the answer. Match what you are doing to what you need.

I've NEVER heard of anyone regretting swapping to a 4L80E. Not always easy, but always very satisfied. Good luck.

Default Change in plan....

Someone please help me out with what I would need to with use my TH400 behind my 5.3/6.0L swap... I have an LS swap book, but it doesnt mention the 400 much.. I know I will need an adapter to go on the flywheel is? (I read something like that a while ago but cant find it now.. What else will I need in order to make it work.. I have a 70 chevelle... my TH400 is already installed in it with a trans brake and shift kit.

What would I need in order to make the fuel injected LSx work.. By the way, I am going to turbo it along with the initial swap.. Just in case that matters...

Along with a 92MM TB, ls6 intake, LS6 or Z06 cam, LS6 or Z06 springs, and 243 heads... This is the plan.... I had to skimp on the xmission because I have a perfectly fresh rebuilt one in it now....

(I am aware of the possible high revving at 70mph on highway..)

I thought I would mention... I have highway gears in my chevelle now.. 273 or something close... Not in the 3's..)
