Default Yank stealth thruster 3000

I have a 98 Z28 and I'm looking for a converter. I found a guy local that has a NIB yank stealth 3000. I have hookers super comps, slp lid, slp 2.5in ORY and loudmouth exhaust. I also have a Texas Speed 228r cam waiting to go in. Is the 3000 gonna be the right set up? I drive the car a lot but want it to perform well too. Any input would be great...first LS1 car.....thanks

The 3000 stall will be "ok" for what you have. But barely.
That cam would prefer a SS3600 or even a 4000 stall.
The thing you want to keep in mind, is that the 228R won't really start making serious power untill you are pushing north of 4000 rpms.
And you want that power as quick as possible.
So picture if you will, nailing the go-pedal from a dead stop. You will have to roll a good number of feet with that smallish stall before you are into the power band.
Meanwhile, your competition is walking away from you, because HIS STALL is well balanced for his chosen cam.
See where I am going?
With the 3600-4000 stall, you car will be into full power mode noticeably quicker right out of the gate.
Oh. You won't gain anything going from the 3.23's to the 3.73's since your upgrading your 'verter. So I would just leave your gears alone.

Personally I wouldnt put a 3000 stall in my car. That would just be a little kick in the pants. If youre gunna go through the trouble of installing a converter at least get one that'll compliment that cam. A 228r/ss3600 is a very daily driveable combo with a good tune. Iv even seen people run that cam with an ss3200 and have pretty good results and daily drive it.

Dannyz, I always thought that the 228r makes power down low not at 4000 rpms. It's not really that big of a cam and doesnt need to rev to the moon like the bigger cams ie.ms4 etc. to make decent power.

well depending on if the price is right you could always buy it and send it back to yank for a restall. It was $250 for a restall from them last time i looked

Yes and no. It does make power at around 3500rpms but look how much it jumps from there up.

And don't forget to take shift extension into account as well.
SS3600 will get it done.

I was thinking that the 3000 was a little low, and no, the price wouldn't be worth it to pay that for a restall. I could buy a new one at what stall speed I want. The cam is definitely going in it so I'm gonna stay away from the 3000. Thanks for the input fellas

Another question I had is....my car is a 98...built 11/97...I thought the 98 motor had perimeter valve covers? The heads have "241" cast on them. How can I find out what year the motor is?

98s do have perimeter valve covers with the coils bolted right to them (no brackets) and the heads are supposed to be 806 casting.

The engine year might be 01-02 I believe. I swapped a 2000 motor into my 98 and it came with 853 heads.
