a4 GTO stuck in 3rd gear (limp mode)
Hey guys, I picked up a stock 05 GTO a few months ago and recently put some headers on it and got a street tune. Everything was working fine until this morning when I stepped on the gas (50% throttle) to pass someone and then, all of sudden, the transmission went into 3rd gear and stayed there. I have been told that this is the limp mode the transmission enters to protect itself. I noticed a few moments later that the spedometer wasnt working, so I took it to my buddys shop and changed the VSS. No beans, the car is still stuck in 3rd. My friend hooked up to a SnapOn Verus scanner to it, deleted all the transmission codes, and noticed the VSS was giving proper speed readings on the scanner and not the speedometer. My friend hooked a SnapOn Verus scanner to it, deleted all the transmission codes, and noticed the VSS was giving proper speed readings on the scanner and not the speedometer. We pulled the codes and got the following:
I really don't know were to go from here. Any and all help is appreciated.
- p0218 - Transmission Over Temp Condition
- p0562 - System Voltage Low
- p0563 - System Voltage High
- p0703 - Brake Switch Circuit
- p0711 - Trans Temperature Sesnor Curcuit Out of Range
- p0713 - Trans Temperature Sensor Curcuit Signal High
- p0719 - TCC/Brake Switch 'B' Circuit Signal Low/Short
- p0722 - Output Speed Sensor Circuit No/Low Signal
- p0723 - Output Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent
I really don't know were to go from here. Any and all help is appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the trans as those codes are putting the trans into limp mode.
You NEED to find the cause for all those codes.
I can only guess - a major connector is loose or an important ground connection has gone intermittent.

Yeah, that was my first suggestion to him as his tranny fuse keeps blowing, especially after knowing he just installed longtubes + mids and having it tuned. But he's too lazy to go chase wires.
