Default Can you change out the drum brake tailshaft housing for a regular one on a 4l80e?

I'm putting an ls1 and 4l80e in a '96 Mustang. I found a good deal on a running 4l80e, but it's got a weird drum brake tail housing on the rear. The trans is out of a '99 box truck. Can I just swap the tail housing for a regular one, or are the output shafts different? Don't want to buy the trans if I wouldn't be able to use it. Also, with any 4l80e, if it's one from a sbc and not an ls model truck, can I just get the pilot adapter and use the stock converter with an ls1 if I already have a tci flexplate with dual bolt patterns? Thanks for any help, I don't know too much about the 4l80's.

Every one we've messed with the output shaft is about 1" longer than a normal 2WD tailhousing. Supposedly some are the same length.

Thanks for the info Jake, so i'm assuming if the output shaft were 1" longer it would cause issues and not be usable with the regular tailhousing?

you could swap the tailshaft itself if its too long. things would probably add up quick though instead of just finding the correct trans

I have a 4l80e 96 tranny with a slip shaft I would be willing to swap you for your 4l80e with drum brake

Are you serious?
This post was from 2012 for crying out loud! 2012!!
Do you think he has waited on his project 8 years just hoping someone would offer up the trade you're proposing?

Someone actually wants a 4L80E tail with the drum brake configuration...?

Damn; I have no idea how many I must have thrown away after all these years.
