Default manual downshift behavior

I noticed yesterday that when I downshifted into second when slowing down, coming to a red light that there was no engine braking at all. The engine just dropped to idle, and if I gave it gas it would jump up in rpm until it started moving the car again. This doesn't seem correct to me.

Is this normal behavior of the transmission, or is something broken?

Is there a way to change this, in the tune or physically?

ok after some more searching i found this:

"Either your over-run clutches are cooked, or your lugs are broke off the over-run hub of your input sprag. Both are pretty common."

so it looks like a rebuild is in the not so distant future.

Don't believe you are really supposed to be doing this anyways, if you want to change gears with these cars, get a 6 speed is what I've always heard.

Yeah, leave it to gm to put the ability to manually shift in a car that breaks the transmission if you shift it manually.

Leave it to gm to build a power plant that hangs with all other manufacturers 16 years after its production date..

Just because you can does not mean it is intended to do be done all the time.

Justafool nailed it!!

Just the other day some idiot was riding my *** while I was do 5 over(50mph)
Little did the jerk know my escort was going nuts, So I down shifted
Oh they backed 5 car lengths after that, 1/4 mi past the cop the peddle went to the floor and dust in the wind. Stock/orig 98 ram air, auto, 180k on the clock
It still works because it was driven the way it was meant to be not abused

Just a side note: back in the 70's & 80's even the early 90's I laughed at guys that got hot rod's in auto but as you get older you get tired of shifting and transmission's have evolved so much you simply don't have to manipulate the way we used to make them preform

Just my 2 cents

Yeah but some things are more obvious than others. You obviously would break something shifting into park at a cruise, but it's not obvious that you will break something downshifting a gear while slowing down for a stop.

Back then all my cars were autos, th350s and 400s, and I never got laughed at because they were very consistent at the track, witch in turn leads to winning more races.
