Default Converting a stick 86 to automatic

Have an 86 IROC that I would like to convert to an automatic. Car has a big block and headers that sort of share the trans tunnel. Wondering how much different a TH400 would fit compared to a Powerglide. Car has a Lakewood bellhousing and a Ford Toploader in it now. Don't ask Runs 10.80's and scattered a bunch of Muncies on the way. The Ford holds up but can't be shifted like a Muncie. Knocked second gear synchro out and I'm thinking I can sell the repaired Ford and shifter and put the money in a more reliable automatic. Would like a TH400 but don't want to have fitment problems.

Anyone here have both a TH400 and a Powerglide in a third generation that could comment on the size difference and fit? The headers exit right in front of the cross member and are close together.

On an off topic note, any ideas for a tough manual? Car is really a blast with a 4 speed.
