Default way high cruise rpm

Ever since I got the car the rpms for cruise seem unusually high even for the 3.73 gears it's supposed to have. Its turning like 3000 rpm at 70 mph. It's killing my gas mileage. When I give it gas the rpms jump past 3500 like the converter is unolcked.

Maybe your converter is being starved for pressure,
or maybe it's not locking at all. Time for some scanning.

My rpms run exactly like your 4.56 gears but I really don't think that's what's in there, the previous owner said he put in 3.73's.
What exactly am I scanning for, and would the monkeys at advance be able to do it? It's a 94 lt1 if that means anything

Sounds like its clearly not locked. It should not jump up in rpm immediately.

Would low engine temps cause it to not lock? It typically runs about 170-180 degrees on the highway

No that shouldn't have any effect on it.

The answer is yes but its 150f and under that it will not lock. Are you sure temps are above 150f? You should scan it. Don't pay too much attention to your stock dash gauge.

I recall a similar thread in which I calculated that the OP had a 4.11 and not the 3.73 he claimed; the OP then confirmed he indeed had a 4.11. You might want to confirm it too.
As stated, it is clearly not locking up. A scan might tell you why.

My converter starts locking in the mid 1-teens as an FYI. 170 is more then plenty.

The fans come on and off at about 170 or 180 so its about right.
I'm thinking that it might actually have 4.11s based on how high the rpms are but the torque converter isn't locking for sure so I'm trying to find a place around here to scan it that isn't a dealer.
I'm not really sure what all conditions cause the tcc to lock up so I'm not sure what signs to look for without a scanner right now, until I can get it somewhere thatll do it for free.

Many auto stores will let you scan for free in their parking lot. Or take it home as a free rental for a few days after paying $300-$400 deposit.

Jack up the rear wheels, engine off, put the trans in Neutral, mark the rear tires and count how many turns of the driveshaft it takes to turn the tires one rotation. That is your rear end ratio.

Okay I figured it all out, the tcc lockup is fine and someone decided to put 4.56 gears in the back with a loose converter

Why, that is just perfect for Highway cruising.
Glad you figured it out anyway.

Yea I almost wish there was some kind of problem, this setup is really not good for anything, way too much gear.

Tell us where you are located. Perhaps someone can then recommend an experienced mechanic that could swap gears for you. You "might" be able to buy used gears for $150, get them installed for $250 and sell your old gears for $100 for a net cost of $300.
Tell the OP what you paid to get your gears changed.

I'm located in Johnstown PA, about 2 hrs west of Pittsburgh. 300 isn't bad at all, but for the money it's a toss up between them headers and some good rubber. I am interested in how cheap some people have gotten gears though.

When I had 4.56s',loved em.
Ran them from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2012. 1st and 2nd gear were wicked. Still had a top speed of 140. Took 4 trips from Ohio to Florida with them, mpg was 21.5 at freeway legal speeds, the computor handled the mpg well. On a return trip once on I26 from I95 to I77,hooked up with a fast moving group of cars and was in cruise control for an hour at 4000rpm.

Dont get me wrong I love the 1-2 and 2-3 but it won't launch and I hate revving it so high on the highway. although it might be a llittle different with your ls1 that has a higher powerband, I'd say I lower gears would make too much difference.
