Default Torque Converter spacing issue!!!

So I finally got around to checking my converter spacing and I was able to fit a 3/8" drill bit between mounting tabs and flexplate. Car has ran like that the whole time I've owned it(20k+), what can that hurt?

The pump in the tranny which in turn would kill the tranny itself if it stopped working. 3/8 is a fairly large gap between the flexplate and pads.

Too big... You need 1/8" gap...

Somewhere between 3/8" and 1/2" the converter will disengage from the rotor in the pump and their will be no oil pressure.
It is informative to me taht 3/8" worked; I thought that 1/4" was already pushing it.

As mentioned, aim for 1/16" to 3/16" with a goal of 1/8".
I use hardened washers and use calipers to select matching thickness ones so that everything stays true and weight balanced. When I need e.g. three washers for each bolt, I wrap the outside edge of the washers in masking tape so that they are easier to install.

It was a very tight 3/8 and the 5/16ths had a bit of wiggle room. I put .250 shims from summit in it tonight.

I thought 3/8" was crazy! Its a h/c/i ls1 with a 150 shot. Until I had a wheel hop issue a couple months ago, the trans had always ran strong. Its a flt lvl 4.

I got it within the range and I bought some shims from summit racing. I wish I would've seen (the red sentence above)before I installed them. I use a dab of rtv to hold in place.

Will there be any power differences or should I notice anything different with it spaced properly?

Thanks for all your responses!

Not really. Unless the car was already having some issues with the wrong spacing. Was there anything wrong? Otherwise you can be happy that your tranny wont die because of that

One of the biggest and most common reasons for transmissions going bad/having failures is converter spacing issues.
