Default No 3(D) or 4(OD) after a loud thump in transmission

After normal driving the car shifted into 2nd then 3rd then I felt a thump in the transmission and 3rd and 4th went completely out! R,1,and 2 works fine. Any help is appreciated thanks.. 1994 Z28 4l60e

sounds like forward sprag broke. you should be able to upshift to/thru all the gears by starting in 1st.

That is a very likely diagnosis. You are therefore running on just the overrun clutches which don't have a lot of holding power - i.e. easy on the throttle until the trans gets fixed.
