Default Can i use a stock 4L80 trans with 600-700 hp?

Hey guys, I'm doing a budget build on my 95 Mustang. LQ4/turbo/auto. I Picked up a 65k mile 4L80 pretty cheap and was looking to run it as is with a different converter. I am looking for probably mid 600's hp. Can I run it as is? If not what can I/should I do to help it along a bit. Thanks!

Tons of people swap converters and add a Transgo HD2 kit and let em rip. I've heard nothing but good things from them even in stock form. If you got a good deal in it and it's low miles, I'd just run it till it pops. I'd say you'll be surprised.

It appears that denmah does not have any issues with used 80e and plenty of power. I would say one determining factor is your vehicle weight.

4L80s are stout. I don't think you'll have any problems at that weight, especially with the turbo.

My nitrous car killed one with a hd2 kit in it.

I'm under 600hp - smoked the 3rd gear clutches

Yep...
That's why we have our own methods for valve body mods and circuits on our builds and with our valve bodies.

That's what I figured - off the bottle it was fine, on the bottle in high gear the temps would go nuclear.

I'm still up in the air if I want to keep the 4l80, or back to the t56.

I would run it man. Especially if your weight is under 3k. As previously stated, Denmah is a moderator in the FI section and runs them under tons of boost (22#) on all his Fairmonts. The t56 in stock form wouldn't hold a light to it.

I just snagged another 80e for $250. Craigslist deals are out there. I look at a t56 and 60e as a consumable item that blows every year, if stuck behind any kind of HP application.

Also, 80e's don't miss a shift like your adrenalin shifting a t56.

I've had great luck with the T56 - it's only been built once, but it's was time to do it again. Funny enough the only time I miss a shift with a t56 is when something breaks - clutch or syncros.

The 4l80 is ok - I think a built one would fix most of the issues I have with the unit. It just wasn't a quick as I thought it'd be - that might be from the slippage to. PTC found .5 in the convertor last restall and then the trans gave out - so I won't know until I get a fresh unit in it.

The transgo HD2 kit is $120 from summit and there are tons of people pushing 4L80s with nothing but a transgo kit up to 800 HP.
