Default Whats a good tc?

Hi guys. Rebuilding the tranny on my 96 lt1 trans am. I know I'll need a new torque converter, but i don't know which is a good choice. Are there any brands to avoid? Or to trust? I need nothing extreme, mostly stock, no tune, long tube headers and a cat back. And if you can think of anything else to replace while i'm down there I'd love to hear that too!

For the converter I'm happy with my Vigilante. Might want to consider a shift kit in the trans. Definitely add a large cooler.

Definately get you a Transgo hd2 kit since your going to be in there. Don't mess around, go ahead and get a bigger converter. Anyone I've ever seen that gets a small converter always wishes they would have went bigger. My recommendation? At least a 3200, YankSS3600 though will win your heart.

I just put in a northtexasconverters 3600 Billet single disc and I love it they are very competitive on price , n do nice work.
Northtexasconverters, Circle-D, yank, and pt are all a good choice I would steer clear of anything else this is not something u want to cheap out on buy a quality piece from one of these guys and most likely never ull have any problems unless the install is done incorrectly. Good luck with ur choice!! U'll wish u did the stall sooner lol I did! And what he said in post 2 or 3 don't go small I'm glad I didn't go smaller than my 3600

"Are there any brands to avoid?"
generally any brand/model that is stocked/on the shelf at a parts/speed parts retail outlet. Such as B&M,Hughes,TCI(although TCI does make some good ones but at prices of the level of a custom stall).
Contact Yank and/or CircleD for a good custom stall in the 3600-4000 range.

You will need to do rear gears also I recommend 3.73 anything shorter like 4.10 is to short if u have hwy driving to do. I'm running 3.73 and am right at 2500/2600 rpms at 70 and 2000/2100 at 60 in 4th so if its a dd I would do at a min 3.42 and max @ 3.73 anything taller or shorter u'll prolly regret IMO I know I would.

Bigger stall will help though with the factory gears. I wouldn't worry so much about them till after the stall. Guaranteed after you put the stall in you'll be pure grins.

ive owned a vig3600 and a yank3600 which are both great stalls. FTI and Circle D are very good companies also.

i thought the LT1's were better off with a smaller stall like 2800 / 3k?

I have found a stockish LT1 to like a low 3k stall speed. Something in the 3200 range. The op sounds like he may be happy with a modified stock unit and not need a small diameter billet converter. We get around 2600 flash out of it, and they are budget friendly at $400.

Ive been really happy with my PTC converter, those guys know there stuff and price is awesome. I also agree and dont think you need a billet cover, nor 3600 plus stall speed. lt1's make their grunt at a low rpm, 3200 rpm should be plenty of stall as Brian said. Any of the big name's Circle D, Yank, Vigilante, Ptc, should be able to set u up with a good converter.

I have a Lt1 w/ a 4k stall and the car is just silly off the line at the track. I've been wondering now how it would be w/ a 9.5in 3200 stall. I know my 60ft times will suffer, previous was a fuddle 12in 2800. Car would 60ft in the1.7x range. Its hard to say what I've gained with a 4k stall b/c I went from 10 bolt to a 12 bolt and the car slowed down ( heavier driveshaft also) then I added the 4k stall and dropped .2' soff the 60ft and .3 from my previous 1/4 times but at a slower trap speed

Lower stall speeds are desirable in an LT1 because the torque peak is at 2400rpm vs. 4400 rpm in an LS1.
