4l60e or 4l80e??
Hey guys, I was needing some opinions. I have an 07 ltz silverado and the transmission crapped out again. I'm looking at the FLT level 5 65e and read some good reviews but they seem biased towards cars and not trucks. I have a hair over 500 hp at the fly, iron cross heavy duty bumpers front and back, suspension lift and rollin on 35's. My question is, is the level 5 65e a good consideration or is it too heavy and built for it? should I bite the bullet and convert to 80e?

I was afraid that's what I would need to do. Anybody know of a kit for the conversion? And I know its a big task to convert but is it something that I need to take to a shop or can an amateur do it?

A totally stock unit or rebuild will typically live well with up to 450 flywheel HP/TQ. Above this point the direct clutches will not live long without some hydraulic improvements.
Using our modifications or some valve body kits, the direct clutch issues are resolved and the 4L80E will generally be reliable up to the 750 HP/TQ range unless it’s a very heavy combination (over 4500 lbs) or using nitrous.
I would call Jakes and see what they have to say, They can probably tell you what will need to changed or may recommend a the 60e

I don't know what your mechanical ability is so I couldn't tell you if you can do it yourself.

At 500HP I would still consider a well built 4L65E. Don't worry about what level # is on the website. Call Chuck on FLT and tell him what you have. I suspect he will recommend a 4L65E with the (relatively) new Sonnax Input drum and perhaps a billet output shaft. The $450 for that input drum is well worth it. I know that several builders have happy customers running 700HP with heavy trucks.
