Default Torque specs for transmission pan - 10lb or 100lb?

I have a fiber ATP gasket, instructions say 10-12 lbs if not specified by manufacturer. From reading threads that seems right, and that a lot of people over tighten, especially with cork. But I looked it up in my service manual, and it says 97 lb. That's a pretty big difference. Perhaps that's for an oem style gasket, maybe metal/reusable?

97ft/lbs sounds right for something like lugnuts, not trans pan bolts. You sure it's not 97 inch/lbs or something? I think I went mechanically tight so maybe 10-12ft/lbs sounds more accurate.

You're right - looked again, it was 97 inch pounds, so 10lb would be right

97 inch pounds is slightly over 8 foot pounds. 10 pounds is 120 inch pounds. I prefer 75 - 85 inch pounds. Over tightening is common and does nothing but produce problems. Make sure the pan is flat and the surfaces are clean. With Cork & Rubber gaskets, only tighten once. If you re-tighten them they will leak. Start with all the bolts hand tight, then torque them.

You would have answered that question quickly if you tried 100lbs, haha. 10 sounds more like it.

The 97 lb. Is INCH pounds. If ur torque wrench is in Ft. Lbs, Divide that by 12 to get Ft Lbs which is roughly 9 Ft Lbs.
