Default Time for a new trans.

Sadly I pretty much lost 3rd & 4th gear on my 98 WS6 with 191K last night.
I called the local trans shop and was quoted $1700 for a standard factory rebuild. Anything special I should ask them to do? Higher stall & that sort of thing. Can a regular trans. shop reprogram so it shifts into 4th @wot?
Yes I know silly questions but I just want my ducks in a row when I call them Monday to set up the appointment

I would get a built one from one of the sponsors >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Buy what ever "level" your mods dictate. Probably cheaper than having 'some shop' charge you for performance upgrades on top of the $1,700.

I really don't have the time or desire right now to pull it myself that's why I'm taking it to them

Alllrighty then. If it's your DD, I understand. If you had the time you could get a much better trans for the same if not cheaper. GL

Have them use a 4L65E rebuild kit as that has 7 frictions for the 3/4 clutch; it is the only difference from a 4L60E kit and therefore can always be used. Costs about $10 more.
Also have them install the Sonnax 4L60E-LB1 boost valve; distributor TranStar carries them; about $30.

No better time to put in a good converter than when it's coming out anyway. I'd also go with a Transgo HD-2 shift kit, especially if you go the high stall converter route.

If the shop has a tuning tool or works with a local tuner, then they can reprogram your shift points as desired.

Go figure, drove 20mi to the trans. shop today and 3rd & 4th worked just fine. Granted I didn't jump on her too hard. Maybe if I'm lucky it will be a inexpensive fix.
