Default Converter came loose?

Just came back from the track today to try out my Vig 3600 that was installed about a week ago. Coming home from the track, I noticed a ticking sound from under the car. As I drove more and more, that ticking sounds turned in to a rattle and clank. Sounds like to me that the Converter bolts worked their way out, and the clank is the bolts moving around? I know the shop reused the old bolts and cut them to fit. The car shifts like a champ and still runs. Anyone ever had this happen, and what of damage am I possibly looking at?

I am taking the car back to the shop 2morrow, but not sure if its a good idea to drive it over,or should I get a flat bed and have it towed? Thanx, Chris

Pull the inspection cover and take a look.

You risk cracking the flexplate and/or elongating the holes. Use GM 1261968 T/C bolts with loctite torqued to 47 ft lbs.

Chris, post the results from the shop. Mine is doing the exact same thing, after I got it back from having some transmission work performed.

I would guess you have a cracked flexplate, when they crack, it makes a sound similar to marbels rattling around.

If you have to replace the flexplate, TCI makes a bullet proof SF29-1 approved unit for about $200.

What's weird about mine is...it only makes the rattling sound when started cold. Once the tranny is warmed up, you hear nothing else???

Correction: mine was making so much racket, I assumed it was in the tranny, since I just completed some tranny work. After a little more investigation, it turned out to be a tensioner pulley at the bottom of the engine. Not sure what's up with that, but it was jumping around like crazy, and rattling only at cold start. When the engine warms up, it gets quieter, and turns in to a screeching sound...so I'm assuming it's a pulley bushing/bearing gone bad from high rpm usage???

I'm getting the same rattling noise the day after my new Yank SS3600 TC was installed. Rattles like hell until it warms up OK and then the noise goes away. Did you ever figure out what was wrong for ure.

The VIG uses a special bolt that they supply with there converter, if you do not use them, you risk damage to the converter too long and it will bend the cover at the clutch surface and loose clutch contact (void your warrenty also) this will not allow the converter to tighten to the flexplate ---too short and the bolts will come loose.
Also if you have a after market or TCI flex plate make shure that you remove all paint from the mating surfaces as the paint will erode down and loosen the flexplate at the converter bolts and crank and can destroy your converter, transmission, and flexplate

My 69 GTO w/TH 400 & GM L-88 converter has a bad rattling/tapping noise that occurs only when the car is cold just before the tranny shifts. The higher the rpms before the shift, the worse it is. The colder it is, the worse it is - it's fine warm. Once the tranny shifts, the noise goes away until just before the next shift. Checked the TC bolts and they are snug. I've not been able to diagnose the cause.

RevGTO ... that's identical to the problem I'm having. It seems to be coming from inside the transmission housing where the converter is installed. I doubt it's the converter itself. I'm going back out to re-check everything, i.e., O2's, heat shield, belt tensioner. I installed new MAC headers and ORY about 10 days before the Yank SS3600, so, will check the sensors.

Good! Unfortunately for me, I'm quite sure it's not the O2 sensors causing this on my 69 GTO ...

You better double check because you described my problem to the letter. Mine sounded awful! I mean, loud as ****!!!!! I'll bet yours is the same issue. I guess the exhaust gas leaks out and causes the noise, not the snesor vinration. Make sure yours are tight.

The reason being ... O2 sensors were not even a twinkle in an engineer's eye in 1969 ...

Please do not take this the wrong way but is that what was wrong or was that what they told you was wrong. They may have not wanted to tell you what was really wrong in case somthing else goes wrong like a cracked flex plate from the converter bolts being loose.

I put the car up on jackstands. My son and I swapped my headers and I asked him if he was sure to tighten the O2 sensors ... all 4 of them. He said he did without a doubt. Well, at about 2000-2500 rpm's, we noticed a slight rattlish sorta' 'raspiness'. Since MAC's with MAC ORY are notoriously raspy, I figured it was normal. When the TC was installed two weeks ago, I guess the O2 sensor got looser and it started sounded horrendous. It just coincidentally started backing out around the same time the TC was installed. I had to tighten it nearly 2 1/2 full turns to snug it up.

I didn't take your comments the wrong way. I had read this here on the board that it had happene to someone else and they suggested I check the sensor's. I put it up on jackstands this past weekend and that's when I checked. It was the O2 sensor leaking exhaust gases.
