Is it stock? Has it been tuned? There is torque management built into the tune.

I'm wanting to install a shift kit and I read that it is pointless unless you turn off the torque control

Torque management, and yes your car has it. Needs a tune to get rid of it, whether partially or 100%.

A shift kit is not pointless with torque management turned on. Even with torque management on it will still firm up the shifts and the boost valve will still increase the line pressure. Which in turn helps the trans live longer.

Most use the TransGo 4L60E-HD2-C kit. If the trans is not out of the car the kit instructions say to just do the parts of the kit that can be done without removing the trans. Skip the part on page 5 with the reverse input piston if trans is in the car. On page 2 step 3 do not install more than one spacer, it makes the trans shift too hard and breaks the sprag. On page 4 step 1 the knowledgeable people on here prefer the Sonnax .490 O-Ring Boost Valve over the .500 TransGo Boost Valve. The o-rings on the Sonnax valve help stop fluid leaks where it fits into the pump bore and the steel TransGo boost valve sleeve wears the pump bore out faster.
