Budget Build 4L80e
I know this topic is talked about a lot and i have read multiple other threads but i see kind of a mix up in ideas. i have a 97 4L80e out of a work van and its going in to a 2000 Fbody. this trans is going behind a 575hp. its going to have a full manual valve body, people also say that you need to upgrade the clutches. this is where i see the most confusion. people say to use the "red clutches" and then some say dont use them and use the borg warner high energy clutches which give better drive ability. my main question, am i missing something that i need to do and which clutches should be used. Thanks

What people?
OEM Borg Warner Hi-Energy Frictions in the Forward, Intermediate, & Directs. & Cellulose Frictions in the 4th & Overruns Is industry standard.
Stock aftermarket replacement Raybestos Frictions also work well. Against the grain recommendation, But they work...I promise!
Frictions have little to do with a trans holding up to high horsepower & More with Hydraulic integrity, Line Pressure Rise/Boost & a OUALITY rebuild!

I am sure Jake will agree with me, the Borg Warner Hi-Energy clutches are the best to use here. The Alto Reds will not last as long as the BW Hi-E's. Whenever I build anything, if BW Hi-E's are available, I use them. I have found nothing to beat them, and their cost is always the lowest.

Clutches are a minor concern as stated above. Clinebarger summed it up nicely, the real secret is everything he mentioned above, plus quality hard parts when the application calls for it (575hp should be fine with stock parts, unless that number is achieved through spray).

Raybestos also makes high quality frictions!
Alto has a Hi-Energy line of frictions that I personally have not had any problems with, I might get burned at the stake over that comment

I don't have any experience with the companies in the links, Just examples.
