Default Swapping out the tailshaft - 4L65E

I've got a 2005 4L65E out of a Sierra 1500 and I want to use it in a 2WD application. I've trawled Youtube and seen several disassembly videos. I'm fairly sure that I need to remove the valve body so I can unhook the front band before I can get the drums out to reach the retaining cir-clip.
Can anyone confirm this as 100% necessary. And if I do have to remove the valve body, should I replace the paper gasket or hope they separate in one piece?
I have a 2WD tail-shaft and rear housing all ready.

Thanks - over in the UK so I would have to chase up the gasket :-(

It would be best to have new valve body gaskets on hand as they tend to tear when removing the valve body.

Removing the valve body makes it easier to get the band out, but I would say not absolutely necessary. You do have to remove the servo for sure.
You may want to buy a "reseal" kit to be sure you have the servo o-rings, the VB gaskets and the gasket between the pump and the case that you absolutely must replace. There are o-rings on the 6 pump bolts that should be replaced too.
Opening a trans this far is a slippery slope - you are likely to tear the teflon rings on the stator shaft or the input drum. Before you know it, you are doing a complete rebuild.

OK, never simple, all points taken. Spotted this video today which shows it can be done.
at about 1:15. Does not show if the servo has been pulled though....

I have the pump gasket, sump gasket and now I know to be VERY careful.

Thanks :-)

No way around removing the Servo, Then you can lean the Input Drum/Reverse Input Drum away from the Band Anchor, Unhook the Band off the Anchor, Then pull The Input & Reverse Drums out.

Well that went well :-) Only had to release the servo a little (far enough to let the o-ring pop into the c-clip grove) to get the band off its peg, everything else went very well. Just got to swap it into the car and try it out. Only a 4L60E though, not a 4L65E as the www implied it might have been. All nice and clean inside, including the pan. Very little dark matter.....
