Question How to determine short vs long output shaft on 4l60e?

Hey there. I am plotting out the swap of a 5.3 and 4l60e in my 75 k10. My main issues are involvig mating trans to the transfer case. A local guy who specializes in np205's gave the info about short vs long output shafts pertaining to mating the t-case his way. The short should be about 1/2" to 5/8" (give or take) out of the transmission, and the longs should be around 5".

Whatever he does, he said the SHORT ones are much easier and cheaper to mate to the tcase.

So my question is
Does anyone have any info on what exact transmissions came with a short shaft? maybe model years, or just certain trucks or cars or something.
He said it is not just 2wd or 4wd.

any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

I'll let one of the pro builders correct me if needed, but I believe all 2WD (RWD) 4L60E have the long output shaft. So you will need a 4L60E from a 4WD vehicle.

Assuming your 5.3 is an LS engine (sorry I don't know all LT/LS engine sizes), you will need a 4L60E from a 4WD that also had an LS engine.

The guy I was talking to about transportation said that the transmission being 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, has nothing to do with the length of the shaft

I agree with mrvedit. I’ve never heard of that before. I have never seen the short 4WD output shaft in a 2WD vehicle.

I think your transfer case guy has confused the info somehow. There are only two 4L60E output shafts,2wd or 4wd,you want a 4wd version, but your best bet is to get a 4L80E instead.
