Default 4l80e how do I keep this thing cool???

I have a 4l80e with a 4k stall behind 500hp in a 2000 camaro. Cruising I see temps from 150-170. When I make a pass with no burn out the temps will quickly jump to 200-210. If I were to do a burn out then make a pass the trans would get too hot.
I have 2 coolers on the tranny. A hayden 1405-15"x10" and a 1403-11"x7". These are tube and fun coolers. I don't have the radiator cooler because my car was originally a 6spd car.
My temp sensor is inline on the pump line coming from my trans going to my cooler. I figure that a pretty accurate reading.
How do I keep this thing cool while making a few passes?? Thx

Read the pan temp, you could see 400* easily where you are reading it with a high stall converter, beating on it.

Read the pan temp? Relocate my sensor to the pan?

Replace the tube & fin coolers with a large stacked plate unit and put fans on the cooler.

Not necessary.
He's simply reading from the wrong location.

If you know the temp of the fluid going into the first cooler, you'll need to know the temp of the fluid coming out of the last cooler to know how effective they are at cooling the fluid. That's probably more gauges than most want to deal with. If the temp is taken at the pan, then you know what what the fluid temp is going back into the transmission internals and to the pump, which is what many consider to be the best place to measure the temp. I think Jake is saying that you should move your sensor to the pan.

What are you using for trans control? The 4L80E has a built in trans temp sensor in the pan (built into the MPS) If you are using a factory GM PCM or any form of after market control that I know of (other than a manual control box) you can read this data to get pan temp without relocating the temp sensor.

Also multiple coolers are not as efficient as a single large cooler thus increasing friction loss across the cooler circuit. It is best to use one cooler large enough to cool the entire system. There are a few other issues that can cause low cooler flow; however, I would check pan temps first like Jakeshoe said.

Ok guy, I've relocated my temp sensor to the test port as was suggested by a friend. Temps are 140-150 when cruising and max 175 after making a few wot passes. These temp I'm very happy with.
My next question is, other than the pan is the test port a quality location for the temp sensor?
Thank you guys for your responses.

The test port is fine for getting a temperature reading, but iirc there would be a slight temp difference between reading from there and the pan with the test port reading a little higher.

first off you need to get rid of those tube/fin coolers. They are junk. get yourself a radiator you can mount it parallel to the ground with a fan and you could also tig weld a shroud to direct air properly since it would be sideways against airflow. this would allow you to mount it under the car and save space in the engine bay.
