Default 4L80E Running Hot

2000 twin turbo LQ4 TA. The car has approximately 100 miles on a T56 to 4L80E swap and in light cruising the car is routinely seeing trans temps of 200+. Gauge is an autometer with the sensor in the pan. Trans is a 4l80e with heavy duty clutches, billet shaft, transgo HD shift kit, Circle D billet triple disc converter with I believe a 3300 stall, B&M trans cooler with braided steel AN lines mounted in the rear of the car. The car has a Griffin radiator so no trans lines are running to that. The fluid level is correct and the fluid is new, everything seems to be circulating through the cooler fine, so the one thing that seems possible is that the cooler is not getting enough air under the rear of the car? The trans cooler does not have a fan mounted on it. Anyone run into this before? Also not sure if the overheating may be something computer related? I can update with additional info if I missed something. Attached is a picture of where the cooler is mounted.

Not sure why you mounted it in the back, but you need air movement.
Mine is mounted in front, but sits right under the front bumper at an angle,
so it catches air-no room with the intercooler, so that's where it is.
If your driving around with the converter unlocked, high stall conv. that adds to the heat.
You either need to mount a fan, move it into air flow, upfront, or try adding one of the heat. syn. type coolers in the line

The cooler was located there when I bought the car. With the intercooler and radiator that has two fans mounted on it, there is not much room in the front of the car. I thought there would be a decent amount of air going under the car but it would appear otherwise.

Yes I would agree location and air flow are your issue, You will need to either relocate of find a fan with a decent CFM

Your cooler is doing pretty much nothing. Get it up front where some air flow is going through it. Best place to mount a cooler is onto the frame rail at an angle in front of the condensor. But not near the condensor or touching, thats no good.

Thanks for the input guys. I ordered a fan with a pretty solid CFM that will be here tomorrow. If that doesn't bring the temps down I will have to find another spot to mount it.

Added a fan to the cooler on Friday night and still seeing temps up to 220 with normal cruising and not getting into boost. The thermostat for the fan is set to come on around 140. I verified the trans temp gauge with an infrared thermometer last night. The fan is currently set up as a puller. Would wiring it to be a pusher be a better option? I'm not really sure where to go from here with this automatic witchcraft.

What size are the braided lines? And how long are they?
Any way to check the flow rate going back to the trans?
Anyone know what a good flow rate is in Quarts/Minute?

I was having similar issues in my truck with the derale hyper cool unit under the cab. 200 sitting and would get up to 250 driving sometimes. I relocated it up front and that took care of most of my issues now 190 cruising and 220 beating it. Part of my issue is a stall in a heavy truck and I forgot to put the o ring on the input shaft so it doesn't have lock up at the moment. I just ordered the stuff to hook up my stock cooler in the radiator as well as the derale it has now so I think that should take care of it.

Best way...IMO...to mount a fluid cooler. This is how mine is mounted.

Post #5 in this link.....https://ls1tech.com/forums/general-m...g-success.html

Don't mount any cooler laying right on a condensor.
Mount it at an angle, this allows ambient air to blast through it from the front air dam, but not go directly through the condensor or radiator while its hot. The space behind it because of the two mounting spacers allows ambient ram air to mix with the hot air coming off the tranny fluid cooler before it goes through the condensor or radiator, so its not hot anymore.
