Trans compatability

The '96 is a 298mm input shaft trans and most/all LS engines expect a 300mm input shaft trans.
The 298mm input shaft trans can be bolted up with a spacer and enlarging the holes in the flexplate.
The '96 is definitely not a 4L65E since GM didn't introduce that model till '02. Perhaps it was rebuilt to 4L65e specs.
If never rebuilt, your LS1 will probably shred/break the '96 in a short time.
I know people are on a budget, but there are too many stories here of "A local guy rebuilt my trans for $500", or "I bought a $500 trans from the junkyard", followed by "but the trans only lasted 3 months". As a result these people have lost $500 and many hours/money installing the junk trans and are now back to square one.
Reasonable quality local rebuilds start at $1000 plus $500 for the removal/install.
Performance rebuilds start at $1500 from our excellent sponsors.
What I am saying is, think twice about putting a 20 year old JY trans into your car. Keep in mind that if the trans fails, it may also ruin your converter and run up a big towing bill.

it's not worth putting a junkyard unit in believe me bro you don't want that hassle when that thing takes a dump. I bought a performance built G2 4L60E for my 94 k10 and it works like a dream.

What engine do you have? If you have the 5.3L LS engine you need the 4L65E with a top bolt hole. a 4L60E is what I have in my 95 lol.
This is partly incorrect info. See below.

The bolt hole in the 12 O'Clock position indicates a 300mm input shaft. There is no visual way on the outside to tell a 4L60E from a 4L65E; the difference is minor and not worth worrying about.
It is correct that you want a 4L60E/4L65E with a bolt hole in the 12 O'Clock position for an LS engine.

call any transmission remanufacturer, even Ian Johnson on Xtreme 4x4 has said it, they'll tell you if you have a top bolt hole at the 12 o clock position its a 4L65E, which is a 4L60E 2PC case with a topbolt hole at the 12 o clock position. however you're of course correct with the input shaft difference between the two.

So in his 2000, he needs a ls style 4l60e trans from any 98+ Camaro 99+ 4l60e auto Silverado 1500 or envoy/trailblazer Colorado with a 5.3? Will a 4l65 or 4l70 also work? I read the later 4l70E have a different plug and harness inside but are doable up until 2009. Who knows for sure?
I'm going through something similar now. I have a newly built 4l70e from my trailblazer ss, I want to know if I can put in in a 99 Camaro ss without any hiccups. I know the tq conv is the same. Wondering if it will be a simple bolt in.
And more difficult, if I cant find a stock 4l70 for the trailblazer ss I heard there is a way to get a 4l60e working in a '06 by deleting the transmissan input speed sensor in the tune, but what else is needed to make allow it to work? Anybody have any insight?

I think we will all agree that the '98 to '02 Camaro with LS1 engines came from the factory with a trans with a bolt hole in the 12 O'Clock position.
Wikipedia confirms it is a 4L60E and not a 4L65E:
"An updated 4L60-E, the 4L65-E (RPO M32), was phased in the 2001 model year when coupled behind the 6.0 Vortec. Five-pinion front and rear planetaries, along with an additional 3/4 clutch allowing 7 clutches in the input housing and induction hardened input shaft assembly, were improved to withstand up to 380 ft·lbf (515 N·m) of torque."
Or look at sponsor FinishLineTrans.com website. Their 4L60E shows the 12 O'Clock bolt hole and when you upgrade to a 4L65E, they mention the 5-pinion planetaries.
In short, all '98-'02 V8 A4 Camaros came with a 300mm 4L60E. You can replace them with any 300mm 4L60E, 4L65E or 4L70E between '98 and '08.
When installing a used trans, I would suggest a 2003+ 4L60E/4L65E/4L70E as they will have the improved heat-treated Sun Shell; I also think GM improved the sprag in later years.

(OK, I guess you can visually distinguish a 4L70E by counting the pins.)
You are correct that very late model 4L70E are electrically incompatible and have a different plug and harness inside. I'm not exactly sure when this change happened, but I suspect that at least some '09 are already incompatible, but I think you are safe with all '08.
Sorry, a '05 or earlier 4L60E/4L65E will not work in a '06 or later vehicle as those require the ISS. We have discussed in this section and in the tuning section if it is possible to delete ISS in the tune and no one has found a way to do so.

Yes, any 300mm 4L60E, 4L65E or 4L70E up to '08 will bolt up and work perfectly with your '98-'02 Camaro. There is no way to visually distinguish them from the outside. While the 4L70E will have the input speed sensor (ISS) and two extra pins in the connector, your '99 harness will still plug right in as those pins will be ignored.
