4l80 vs th400?
sup everyone
Im new to this platform. so dont mind my rookie questions. i been doing research for few days now. i still cant decide on which setup i should go with. im either doing a 5.3 or 6.0 swap in a ****** jeep (just like lsx *****). i asked few people and i been getting mixed answers. goal is 500rwhp for now and it will be a daily. well kinda like a daily since im always working.
heres what i got from doing research pretty much the 4l80 is the new th400 with all the sensors and ****. itll hold up pretty well stock. building it down the road isnt an issue. yes i know it costs little more stock vs stock from what i have been seeing online. big price difference from the two.
this is where im lost at
If i go with Th400 what kind of rpms would i be seeing cruising around town?
what is the best year go to with for the th400 since they came in so many models and years.
what would i need to mate the th400 to the ls? possible what would it cost?
is it worth just going with the 4l80 instead?
i know its geared for the ls and itll be a better option but i dont mind the 3 speed since i could find the th400 fairing cheap i could always use the extra money to beef it up to handle more power for down the road.

4L80e is basically an electronic TH400 with overdrive.
RPMs in town will be the exact same between them.
They both bolt to the LS engine the exact same and use the same flexplate (and sometimes converter).
The 4L80e is a better transmission, but with them being electronic will need to be either converted to a manual VB or wired to the stock LS ECU and tuned.

Your main advantage with the 4L80 is the overdrive and lock-up which will make your cruising feel as it its stock. We have several TH400s available and custom designed converters available for both platforms if you would like we can spec a converter out for you. Just have to fill out the FTI converter build sheet below.

Nobody knows what RPM's you will be turning, but a 400 is 1.00 in drive,
so if you know the tire dia, rear gears, you can plug in those figures to one of the online calculators, and see if the RPM's vs speed is doable
A 400 is a lot cheaper, easy to rebuild, but an 80E isn't to bad to rebuild.
I just went with like 3.25 rear gears and a 400, so it isn't to bad

I got a used 4l80e for $700 shipped from ebay, 90k miles, looked great smelled great. Took it to a local trans-shop where I know the owner fairly well and let him put an HD2 shift kit into it.
He reminded me they sometimes lose reverse for some reason. I took that into consideration but didn't let him open the trans up from the top (only the pan/shift kit was done).
Put it into my 3000lb~ car and it works fantastic. You don't even feel the weight behind a V8 engine, and it cruises very nice. Get the pinion angle right, do research. I've tried 4.11, 3.69, and 3.92 gears, and soon I am going to a 3.52 or 3.45 because my logs indicate I can achieve 25-28mpg by doing so, and the engine has no lack of torque.
