Default Will I be disappointed?

I never put much thought in to the rear end of my car, I am dropping in a stock LQ4 with a 4L80E. The rear gears are 2.73. It's a cruiser, might see a track once or twice in it's life. Will I be depressed when i hit the pedal for "funnsies"?

Yes.... Put a stall in. My gf has a bolt on ls1 camaro a4 with 2.73's. It was a dog! Just finished doing a 4k stall and its moves!!! Shift extensions are great and no more dead spots in certain moh rolls

I wasn't planning on using the stock stall at this point. I want to upgrade that before it goes in. All the threads a looked at suggested to use the stock stall as an anchor and nothing else. lol

As long as you do a nice sized stall you'll be happy. People barely gain any et or mph by swith rear gears on a auto.

I went from a 273-2342 and it was nice. I just got my Circle D 3200 stall and now it's wow.A quality stall will definitely help.

As long as you put an aftermarket torque converter in it you'll be good. If you don't its going to feel a little a lazy.

New Franklin Ohio, just down I77 from me.Cleveland area. 3.73s' with a 3500-4000 stall is a popular combo here in the forum. Don't consider something below 3500 and only from a good company such as Yank,CircleD,or other comparable good ones.
I'll put some links in to other threads.

If we were talking about an LS1/4L60E combo I would agree 100%, but as the OP has a 4L80E his internal 1st gear is only a 2.48:1 (vs. 3.06:1 for the 4L60Es found in LS1 F-bodies.) That numerically lower internal 1st gear, plus the fact that his Chevelle likely weighs a bit more than the average 4th gen F-body, will make that 2.73 feel much more sluggish than what would be typical for a 4th gen F-body.

Just for the sake of comparison, and assuming same tire diameter, a 4L80E/TH400 with a 2.73 final gear is like having a 700R4/4L60E with a 2.21 final gear at launch and throughout 1st gear. Or, on the flip side, having a 700R4/4L60E with a 2.73 (very common with the 4th gens) is like having a 4L80E/TH400 with a 3.37 at launch and throughout 1st gear. Without the aggressive 3.06:1 internal first gear of a 4L60E/700R4, he may want a bit more final gear ratio to tighten things up.

Does that '72 Chevelle have an 8.5" 10-bolt? If so, you could consider a 3.08, 3.23 or 3.42, in addition to the higher stall, for a nice improvement in street manners while still maintaining decent highway rpms. For the 8.5", it would be a 3-series carrier if the rear was originally a 2.73 or [numerically] higher ratio.

I grew up in Brunswick, real close to cleveland. I knew from day one that 2.73s would be a down fall. I want to do 3.73s eventually.

It does have the 8.5 with the 2 series carrier. The fact that i need to swap carrier just to do gears has kept me from making the swap so far.

As this is an 8.5" 10-bolt, it should be a 3 series carrier if it was a stock 2.73 rear. 2 series should be 2.56 and numerically lower on the 8.5". This is different from the break point on the 7.5/7.625" or 8.2" 10-bolt.
