Default Transmission oil types by years

Hey guys, well I'm about to install my torque converter and I need to fill the converter with trans fluid. I'm not sure what type of fluid its on the transmission now. The engine/trans(4l60) came out of an 2005 suburban. I called the dealer and they advised me that it could be Dex-III or Dex-V , they wont be able to tell me for sure unless I have the vin. I don't have the Vin so now I don't know what transmission fluid to use for this. I appreciate the help in advance

DEX 6 covers everything now, also buy the cheapest Dex 6 you can find. It all comes out of the same pipe. Walmart is probably the cheapest.

Don't overthink it - the cheapest fluid labeled "Dexron VI" will work fine as anything so labeled has to meet the GM specifications. Some will be marked as full syntetic and some might be blends. Here is another forum thread I found informative:

DexIII formulation is still available from several sources, such as Valvoline, under the "Dex/Merc" labeling, if you want to go that route. That is what I use in my old TH350 and 4L60E. Dex VI isn't a requirement for the older style 3 and 4 speed autos.

AC Delco Dex VI fluid can be had for $21 a gallon. That's what used in my rebuild.
