Default Need Advice

I went to a well known tranny shop and I was telling the guy I want a 3000-3500 stall. He said that, that was to much stall for my cam(224/228 567/571) b/c I was way over the powerband of the cam and I need something b/t 2000-2500. He claims the converter needs to start with the powerband of the cam. Any thoughts please???

Just what I was going to say....he is full of or does not know jack ****. STOCK cars run quicker with stalls up to and above 4,000 and your cam will only push your powerband higher. I would get AT LEAST a 3500 stall. That is what I have and it is just enough, and I don't even have a cam yet. I would not use that shop again.....he may be really good but once I get mis-information that obvious from a shop I would walk away......

Actually the guy is correct - in one sense. You need to match your power band. He just doesn't know the power band of our cars. If your peak torque is 3500-4000 (which most of our cars are) the 3500 is perfect. When was the last time you seen one of our cars (even stock) have a torque that peaks at 2000?????

The 3500 will serve you well.

That is a good point. He has the general idea right, just missing hte details. Torque with the stock cam doesn't really come on until at leats 3k, and hits hard around 3.5-4, as stated. Get at least a 3500!!!

A 3000 - 3500 will be ideal. 3500 would be fairly ideal performance wise, but I don't know how heavy a Jimmy is, so a 3500 might feel pretty loose depending upon your gearing.

A lot of guys in shops out there only know the SBC - when it comes to the characteristics of the LS1/6, they're clueless. Guys with traditional Pontiac experience know the problem well - you're constantly fed nonsense based on what works with SBC's. You will get better advice on anything LS1-related on this board than anywhere else.
