Default Why is my car hitting the rev limiter on the shifts......????

Help me out...going racing this weekend...

Tranny mods are a Midwest 3500 stall, GM deep pan, 24K cooler, and a TransGo shift kit. 55K miles on the car/drivetrain.

I have the rev limiter set to 6600, and the shifts are set to 6300. I have 2 washers in the accumulator...stock servos...I followed the shift kit directions to the letter. Works perfectly.

At the track, sometimes it will just touch the limiter on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. I went 12.7 @ 108 with this problem. When it shifted fine (1 run) it went 12.35 @ 107. Sometimes it will cure itself if I lift the gas just a little, but I dont like doing that. Oh, I also did the bump stop mod on the TB...would this have any effect?

WTF? My cam doesnt like to be shifted at 6300, lol.....

Ideas?

Probably the most common reason for hitting the rev limiter in a A4 is worm clutches/band.If you can, scan the car while it's doing it,and see at what rpm the shift is being commanded at.If you see the commanded gear change, say from 2nd to 3rd,and the rpm's stay high enough to be in the rev limiter, you have tranny concerns.

I'll say it once again.... If it only is happening at WOT and from very slow or a dead stop than get the tahoe tranny pan (angles forward)...your pick-up is likely sucking air untill you hit the limiter and stop pulling ...the whole g-force thing is in effect here. All the tranny fluid is running to the back of your pan. I do not recommend overfilling it, but 1/2 qt may halp a little. Either that or its your clutches.

I just went through the same thing, but mine was traced back to the cooler. You are not getting enough fluid to the pump. By the time 2-3 shift comes your pickup may be looking for fluid causing a drop in line pressure. The dealership tech even recomended an xtra quart of fluid. Hope this helps, cause a good rebuild isn't cheap or easy to find .

I'm going through this exact thing with my tranny right now and I've pretty much lost Drive. Oh well, I wanted a new tranny anyhow.

So there's two different pans used by GM? A deep & a deep/angeled
I know there are the deeper pans that have the drain plug, and the those that do'nt that where used a year or two before. Is this how you reference the difference?

imkmfast,

Mine has the drain plug and is about 3/4"-1" deeper than the stock pan. It holds 1 extra quart.

From the back the pan is the same depth as stock, and then about 4" forward into the pan it kicks down ~1" and it is that deep all the way to the front.

Hmm....maybe I should disconnect the cooler and see if it cures the problem...??

Thanks for the info guys.
