Default TH400 guys, do you regret NOT getting the Gear Vendors OD unit?

I am trying to justify the 2K cost of the unit, just for OD. The car will be a 90% track only car, but the track is 60+ miles away on the highway. I have 3.73 gears.
I just want to do it right the first time no not regret it later that I didnt dish out the 2K to get the setup.

The very best advice I can offer you is from years of trying to make cars fast. Either build a street car or a strip car. If you try and build something that will do both, you'll end up with a car that's not great at either. This is my opinion from trying to have the best of both too many times.

If you want to go fast, I'd just go with the t400 and no O/D. Remember, there was a time not too long ago that there was no such thing as O/D. Your tranny can handle it, just get a good cooler and keep up on the maintenance. In the early 90s I daily drove a 67 Camaro with a t400 and 4.56 gears. Car never had problem.

Good luck with your decision.

I would say more I dont have an actual weight but I have lifted both and the t400 feels a lot heavier.

This is the reason I went back to an A4.....
If the car is more a track car then deal with the revs, you can also run larger rear tires to get back some RPM but I drove mine daily with TH350/3.73/26" tires and it got old. 28" rears would have given back 200-300 RPMS, the next idea is less gear.

If I could do it over I would have bought a 4l80 from the start!! Figure $1400 for t400, $850 for converter. For a measly $1000 more I could have had one! If you starting from scratch, go directly to a 4l80, otherwise its to much of a loss after you sell your t400 and converter. As far as the GV goes, It still does'nt give you lockup! It will NEVER be as efficient as a 4l80. Just my .02.

You have to make the decision before you buy the transmission. You always have to give things to be faster, like overdrive, give up horse power for a beefier drive train, gas mileage, ect ect.

I just drove my car for the first time with the TH400. It's really not as bad some people say. Do I wish I still had overdrive? Sure..do I miss it? not really

Like said above...if you want to go fast/ have a beefy drivetrain you gotta give up somethings...
