I'd like to just take a quick poll to see how long people have had their built 4L60E's last. I'm particularly interested if you make more than stock HP. I'm having a hard time finding more than a few people who have had their built (not stock) trans last more than 40k or so. So, post up how long your trans has lasted, who built it (FLP, Rossler, etc.), and maybe what kind of power your putting down or power mods you have done. Also, maybe even a rough estimate of your car's weight.

35K Miles. It didn't break, the 3-4 clutches just expired.

This was my setup:
ProTorque 10.5" 2900-stall converter, Built 4L60-E, full roller thrust bearings, 5-gear GM planetaries, Raybestos kevlar band and Blue-Plate Special clutches, TorqueDrive hardened input shaft and drum, "The Beast" extreme duty hardened and balanced reaction shell, Torque Master reaction carrier shaft, Borg-Warner double cage sprag, Corvette servo, full TransGo shift kit set up to stage one but no washers, B&M cast aluminum 4L60-E pan.

About 500HP and 600 ft/lbs torque at the crank.

I hate to jinx myself but........81,000 miles so far. Only thing I've changed is fluid, filter, and a shift solenoid ($15).

The last 45,000 have been with a 4200 stall. It's seen many track passes.

Mike Kurtz 4L60E from late '97 or early '98. It expired last year after about 26K miles and ~400 passes. Car was running 12.5's for the most part with about 3300 curb weight. Put the hose on the car last year and street raced it spraying a few times. Shortly thereafter the tranny suffered a cracked sprag and a few other issues.

Bear in mind that we have better parts available than back in '97/98, and I'm sure Mike's 4L60E's are even stouter now.

I'm not asking for a recommendation per se. I just want to take in people's overall experience with the transmission life of a built 4L60 trans, as I haven't seen too many of even the stoutest built 4L60 transmissions last all that long.

Limit your downshifts from nailing it from a roll and it will last a long time.
FLP builds one hell of a trans.

broke twice in about 12 months year. first time I was ripped off (had stock parts)... second time... too much power blew it up. I'm going th400 now.

Sorry, I missed the part of being a built tranny.
Bone stock tranny(except for converter). No shift kit or anything.

Just keep my fingers crossed and hope it keeps going. So far so good....

Come on people, post up. I really want to see how long a properly built stout 4L60 is good for. I think this will really help people in deciding what route to go when they need a new trans. I know there are quite a few people that have been thru many transmissions, this thread can perhaps save others from going thru similar problems.

This is my third one im building now. All new clutches with an extra clutch per gear, straight steels, new bands. The TCI rebuild kit. TCI shift kit. TQ Managment deleted.
This is with 489.5 rwhp and 502.5rwtq and a PIG *** car weighing in at 3940. The last tranny lasted 2700 miles.... im building up a TH-350 now and the pig is going on a big diet.

My old man built me a 4l60e, said "that thing will break in no time". Put all the good hard parts in with a shift kit and held this 408 like it was it's job! Oh, plus the extra 125 shot behind it! This car is a DD, so a th400 was out the question. I am past 80k on the rebuild and still shifts like a champ. My father is the head builder of AAMCO here in Northern, VA, his shop had the least amount of come backs out of the whole chain! Its good to have family that knows their stuff

Stock 144k"not a typo" ... had one built lasted 1500 miles and 3 and 4 clutches burnt up....

22000 kays and still going on built trans and stock converter. 80+ runs and the car is only 9 months old. Built the trans at 3000 kays. One of the first things I did and it hasnt missed a beat.

7000 miles and over 100 high 10 low 11 sec passes. Still like new
Rossler transmission. Still to new to tell for sure. Not many hold up to this type of abuse in a full weight car

Mike Kurtz from Century fully built 4l60e and it goes out all the time. It's gone out twice and I've never been to the track. I think it's goin out again cuz it's slipping really bad all the sudden. i dunno if he's riggin it to break all the time or what cuz I baby this thing

I'm still on my stock 98.Transgo with full race settings and hand trimmed seperator gaskets to perfectly align fluid passges. PI 2800 converter.

I have only 15K miles on it but at least 150 track runs most of which were on the bottle up to 200hp jetting. Now it sees 11psi boost and when ever driven always sees WOT.

I had thought the trans was going as It would not shift 2-3 without hitting rev limiter all of last year. I put the shift tables back to stock and added 1 extra qt fluid. This made such a dramatic change on the 2-3 I was amazed! It now shifts 2-3 exactly on time and shows 0 signs of slippage.
A lot of trouble with these transmissions can be had with improper table editing. You may think your setting the tables for better performance when your really just screwing up the timing of the shift solenoids.
Setting the shift times to 0 seems to create trouble IMO.

Let's see, the previous owner of my car had the 4l60e rebuilt at speedinc in chicago in early '03. The car was a weekend car and at the track about once a month according to him (yeah f'in right). It had about 10k on it when I put $1400 in it, because of a bad pump and valvebody tore everything up. I had to put a new vert in it also.
Mods are in sig. Curb weight im guessing of about 3650lbs.
