You can just put it in first and go to town. Or you can use the second gear start feature. That's what I do, heats the tires quicker and makes it easier to control the burnout. If you don't have an aftermarket trans cooler you might just want to stick with doing your burnouts in 1st gear.

I do mine in 1st, 2nd if I really want to heat them up. 1st gives you more control over the burnout and less wear on the transmission since it won't be shifting under load.

If you leave it in D or OD, it will shift through the gear at the rpm based off of the TPS %. If you want to control the rpms and upshift to higher gears, start off with 1st, then go to 2nd, and so on (if needed). I used to just hold the brakes in D and play with the throttle to reach a certain rpm, but it would shift into 3rd.

And it won't fry those expensive rear rotors either!Holding the brake down while smoking the rear will burn seals, pads, rotors, calipers and who knows what else!Do what Need2gofaster said get a line lock.

If you are on street tires at the track there is really no need for it. Go around the water box and do a quick break stand to get spinning and ride it out for a sec to clean the junk off the tires and call it good. I cut 1.9 60' times all day with my F1's using this method

This method only applies when the track is well prepped, otherwise on an unprepped track you'll get tire spin. Doing a burnout on street tires may result in better traction off the line. It is best to experiment and use what works!

Get the tire spinning in 1st and then quickly shift to 2nd and finish it out. Don't do burnouts in "d" because there is less line pressure to the tranny that way and can burn up the clutches. You should always manually shift the car while racing too for the same reason.

That's rediculous. 4L60s will not last manually shifting them. The line pressure needs time to build up before the shift and when you shift manually your line pressure be much lower than what it should be.

For the camaro/firebird crowd, this is not good advice.

Avoid shifting gears during the burnout. 1st gear at 5000 rpm will easily heat slicks; just takes 3 seconds longer than using 2nd gear (98 - 99 do not have 2nd gear start)

Unless your shift points are messed up, you can not outshift the A4 on WOT upshifts by doing it manually. Enough people have tried and the conclusion is always the same. They run a couple hundreths slower or, at best, even. If your shift points are not optimal; fix them. There are a number of tuning software options that deal with them and allow you to control a bunch more things that make owning the software a great mod for the A4.

A simple 1st gear burnout is all you need. Manually shifting is for chumps.
