Lightbulb Yank ST3800 and 2.73

hey guys. I'm getting a Yank ST3800 stall and I'm wondering what you think I'll lose off my ET's? currently I'm runnin 12.9X @ 108.+ with 2.73 gears and street tires.I may have some sticky tires by this next racing season so consider that. This will be my daily driver but I dont think I'll be too worried about the looseness. Also, isnt the ST3800 STR like 2.6 or 2.7?
I'll be getting a cam within the next 5-6 months (hopefully the F11 on a 114) so my powerband will be pushed up a little to go along with the shift extension. Tell me what you think of these plans. Thanks!
..Greg

As long as you can get traction off the line, expect 6 to 7 tenths reduction in ET. 2.73 gears are great with a high stall converter, especially with nitrous. Very strong.

I would call Yank to verify the STR (or have them build you a custom one). I think that the ST3200s have a 2.25 str or something close to that, I'm not sure if the whole series retains that str though. With drag radials and a 2.5-2.8 str you should have a real effective combo that's completly street friendly, it should feel pretty tight.

well, I'm getting it from a board member and he says it's a 2.5, and he may be right (havent directly asked him about it). I've just read on here something in the 2.6-2.7 but I'm happy with either. If it is 2.5 thats great because it should help for a good launch

I would look at the SS3600. It will have great driveability and is efficient. The SS3600 has a 2.5STR that will be great for a street/strip TC. I had a TT3000 with a 3.0STR and was tricky to lauch with full slicks. I should have my SS4000 soon and you can check it out. I have the F10 cam and is similar to the F11.

I wanna stay with the 2.73's for a while and have a potent combination with them and hit 11's. once I get into more power and all I'll step up to 3.42's. (I do alot of interstate driving also). I can get 25+mpg now as it sits and the 2.73's will be a nice highway gear to run from a 70+ roll. The ST3800 with the higher torque ratio should do better for my daily drivability on the street with the granny gears. (BTW, ive got a friend (Debian Dog) with the 2.73's and a SS3800 and it rides almost like stock. I believe he runs 12.4-12.5 NA and 11.4 on a 100 shot with a difference being a 224/228 nitrous grind cam and LS6 intake. I should be right there or faster with my LS1 intake and stock cam.

hey Blacker, have you heard of Richmond Performance Musclecars club? Just wondering if you've ran into any of us at Richmond Dragway.

I would not recommend 3.73 gears and nitrous unless your engine can turn lots of rpm. In my A4 2000 WS6, I did not gain any ET by switching from 3.23 gears to 3.73 gears when running nitrous, in fact, I was having to shift to OD before the traps because I was close to hitting the rev limiter in 3rd gear. Not good.

I have been to a few meetings and have been busy as of late. You might try the SS4000, like myself, and it has a STR of 2.6. This converter should drive like a 3200 and haul *** at WOT. The shift extension is short and will keep you are above 5,000rpm, with the stock cam.

i got a friend with a yank 4000 he's getting rid of but this was a better deal on the 3800 and I wanted it to be a little bit more streetable with the gears. he had 3.23's behind it but a big cam.

if you wanna come out to the meets again we've changed locations since Rock-Ola has closed down. We now go to O'Charleys on Brook Rd at Virginia Center Commons on Wed nights at 8:30. Always a good turn out. Later

being that I'm not making more than 315-330 to the wheels, I shouldnt have to worry about a rebuild or new tranny anytime soon should I? I currently have 72K miles on mine now and hasnt given me any problems even with some street shifting and a hypertech shift tune on it for the last 2 years.

Mine has 84K and still have the stock transmission. I also used the HPP3 Shift Firmness for awhile.
