Default 4L70E is coming in 2006

As a sidebar, the 4L60 is now being upgraded to 4L70 capacity.
This is telling us that there is not only the L60, L65, but now the L70 for the 2006 model year.

The 4L65E (it was officially designated a 65E model in mid-year 2003) will be a 4L70E.

2006 Trailblazer SS
Backing the 6.0L V-8 is a new Hydra-Matic 4L70-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. It debuts in the TrailBlazer SS and was developed to handle the high horsepower and high torque loads of performance-oriented light-duty vehicles. Special high-strength and heat-treated materials are used throughout the 4L70-E to ensure it delivers smooth, dependable shifting.

I think it's an all new (well, upgraded I mean) trans.
There's also the rumor of the new 6L80E 6 speed auto for the C6 coming too.

The GM 6-speed auto will be available in several RWD vehicles in upcoming years. Should be real nice.

GM has several new autos in the works we at the dealers are starting to get new product introductory cds so that when vehicles come out with them we will know what new features the trannys have. GM also has some new Manuals in the works as well.

I hope so. The gear spacing has to be better than the 4L60E.

There are supposedly 4 versions (it's a modular design so it's easy to change them around) of it with various torque capacities/ratings but from what I understand it is longer than a 4L60E and could even be larger 'around' as well.
Although if a 4L80E can be made to fit then maybe.

im sure it COULD be done, but im sure its no more of a direct bolt-in kinda job then swapping in a 4L80.

When I first heard about this, I thought it'd be cool to swap it into an F-body too. But I guess I'd have to wonder, fitting six gears into roughly the same sized case (maybe a little larger).........How would it handle the power levels we would all like to be at Would it still rely on bands like the 4L60?

The 6L80E is slated for the Corvette and STS-V, with other models to come later. It uses an internal Transmission Control Module (TCM) which communicates via GMLAN to the PCM which is probably going to make retrofits difficult.

And the 4L70E is RPO M70. It has many of the same 4L65E parts (5-pinion planets, 7-friction 3/4 clutch, stronger input and stator shafts, etc...) but in addition, it also has a strenthened output shaft and a bettern reaction internal gear. Some models will also have an Input (Turbine) Speed Sensor.

Since the tranny will have internal controls, would it be possible to re-flash an a4 car with the OS from an M6 car and then let the new tranny take care of itself?

It still needs inputs like TPS and MAF for shift strategy and line pressure control, which is all communicated over a Controller Area Network (GMLAN) data bus from the PCM.

I assume this means it could be used as a direct replacement for the LS1 4L60E?
