4L70E is coming in 2006
As a sidebar, the 4L60 is now being upgraded to 4L70 capacity.
This is telling us that there is not only the L60, L65, but now the L70 for the 2006 model year.
The 4L65E (it was officially designated a 65E model in mid-year 2003) will be a 4L70E.
2006 Trailblazer SS
Backing the 6.0L V-8 is a new Hydra-Matic 4L70-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. It debuts in the TrailBlazer SS and was developed to handle the high horsepower and high torque loads of performance-oriented light-duty vehicles. Special high-strength and heat-treated materials are used throughout the 4L70-E to ensure it delivers smooth, dependable shifting.

The 6L80E is slated for the Corvette and STS-V, with other models to come later. It uses an internal Transmission Control Module (TCM) which communicates via GMLAN to the PCM which is probably going to make retrofits difficult.

And the 4L70E is RPO M70. It has many of the same 4L65E parts (5-pinion planets, 7-friction 3/4 clutch, stronger input and stator shafts, etc...) but in addition, it also has a strenthened output shaft and a bettern reaction internal gear. Some models will also have an Input (Turbine) Speed Sensor.

It still needs inputs like TPS and MAF for shift strategy and line pressure control, which is all communicated over a Controller Area Network (GMLAN) data bus from the PCM.
