Default Neutral for long idle periods?

I read that if you put the tranny in neutral while sitting at a long light or any other longer periods of idle that it will reduce temp and wear and tear on the tranny by minimizing the buildup of heat in the torque converter.

Is this BS?

I leave it in "D" and hold the break.

Anyone have any reason why putting it in neutral would reduce the heat buildup while idling?

That must be a really long light. If you put it in Neutral, the tranny disengages so theoretically you'll get less heat. I always leave it in drive and sometimes don't even need to press the brakes because of this stall.

There could be some truth to this.
I had a 4L80E that would run hot while sitting no matter what the weather was.
It could be driven down the highway forever, towing, hot weather, etc, trans temps stayed low.
But running unlocked, and thats running including just sitting there in gear idling, it would get hot.
Come to find out though the TCC had some problems where it was dragging or not fully releasing.
Never was able to idle it in neutral long enough to see if it helped.
