Question 2nd and 3rd Gears?

This should be a simple question. What are the 2nd and 3rd gears for in my automatic 2001 WS6? I heard somewhere that running it in 3rd instead of drive will give you more power but use more gas. Is that true and is it safe to run it in 3rd all the time?

I would imagine it uses more power AND more gas. If you put it in D manually you have the overrun clutches grabbing when you let off the gas and you are also turning those and the sprag at all times.

I never use my other gears.. always put 'er in OD and drive away.

I think they just put them in camaros for going down large hills and/or engine braking. My buddy's 1994 Z28 doesnt even have a "1" on the shifter - he can only use 2, D and OD. Supposedly the story is GM did that so people wouldn't drive around in 1 and cause "noise pollution"
